Setting up Screen Time as a parent

You can set up your child's device to manage their screen time. Depending on your device, you may be able to set a daily screen time limit or limit the time a child can spend in an app.

  1. Note: With Screen Time, you can set parental controls for the accounts you are connected to via Family Sharing. You can set rules for all devices or customize them individually.

    From the Home screen, tap Settings.

    Tap Screen Time.

    Scroll to and select the family member you'd like to set up Screen Time for.

    Tap Turn On Screen Time.

    Note: With Screen Time, you can limit when you can access certain apps on your iOS devices. During this time, only apps you select and phone calls will be available. These settings will apply to all your devices sharing the same Apple ID.

    Tap Turn On Screen Time again.

    Note: From this screen, you can manage what content the family member is able to access on their device.

    Tap Turn On Restrictions.

    Tap Turn On Communication Safety.

    Tap Turn On Downtime.

    Note: You can change the Start and End time of your family member's device by tapping on either the Start or End field and choosing the desired time.

    Select an app category.

    Note: You can select multiple app categories or tap Show All Categories.

    Scroll to Time Amount.

    Scroll to the time wheel.

    Enter a passcode.

    Note: To access these features, you'll need to set up a Screen Time passcode. This is different than your Lock screen passcode.

    Confirm your passcode.

    Note: With Screen Time, you can set restrictions for content, changes to account settings, and more. These settings will apply to all your devices sharing the same Apple ID.
