##  Speed test

Before we get started, you should conduct a [**speed test**](/support/article/speed-test).

If you are experiencing speeds much slower than your speed plan, we suggest trying the following troubleshooting steps.

##  Basic troubleshooting

  1. Make sure your modem is in the location your TELUS technician installed it. If it has been moved, put it back in its original location. 
  2. Check your modem is set up correctly and looks like this:

**Pro tip: Ensure your ethernet cable is capable of handling speeds as fast as your TELUS plan. Category 5e or 6 Ethernet cables are ideal for all plans. You should be able to find the spec of your cable printed on the side - "CAT 5" or "CAT 6".**
  3. For testing and troubleshooting purposes, ensure you are connected directly to the TELUS modem. 
  4. Most browsers allow you to clear cache and cookies within the browser history settings. This will help delete some older files that may be slowing down your browser. 
  5. Ensure other devices are not using up large amounts of bandwidth. Examples include devices backing up to the cloud and downloading software updates. 
  6. Reboot your computer.

If possible, perform a second wired [**speed test**](http://www.telus.com/en/support/article/speed-test) using a different device. This should then determine if the issue is related to the one device or an issue across all devices. If you find that you consistently require faster speeds, consider upgrading your plan.

##  Speed test  

Before we get started, you should conduct a [**speed test**](https://www.telus.com/support/article/speed-test).

If you are experiencing speeds much slower than your speed plan, we suggest trying the following troubleshooting steps.

If you are receiving speeds in-line with your plan but find that you consistently require faster speeds or additional bandwidth, consider upgrading your **[plan](https://www.telus.com/internet/)** or if you find that you require a more consistent Wi-Fi connection, consider getting a **[TELUS Boost Wi-Fi](http://telus.com/boostwifi).**

##  Troubleshooting TELUS Wi-Fi problems

  1. Make sure your modem is in the original location your TELUS technician installed it. If it has been moved, put it back in its original location
  2. Check your modem is set up correctly and looks like this:

  3. If you're operating older devices using legacy Wi-Fi technology, consider disconnecting these devices when not in use or upgrading these devices  

__Pro tip__: Wi-Fi speeds may be slower on older devices, such as early generation smartphones, tablets and iPads. They may also be impacting the performance of your whole Wi-Fi network, slowing down other devices in your home. 4. Ensure you're within close proximity to your modem with no obstructions. If you're only experiencing slow speeds in certain areas of your home located farther away from your modem, TELUS Boost Wi-Fi provides additional coverage

5. Turn off inactive Wi-Fi devices

__Pro tip__: Where possible, use a wired connection for any stationary devices such as desktop computers, printers, gaming consoles and TV media boxes.

 6. [**Restart your modem**](https://www.telus.com/support/interstitial/restart-your-modem-or-computer). This will allow your modem to rescan the area and find the best settings for your home 
  7. Reboot your devices 
  8. Ensure radio devices are located away from your modem as these interfere with the Wi-Fi signal. Examples of such devices include baby monitors, wireless speakers, microwave ovens and cordless telephones

9. If possible, try the speed test over a wired connection to determine if the issue is related to the internet entering the home or if it's a specific Wi-Fi issue: 
   - If testing the speed using a wired connection and you have speeds significantly slower than your plan, give us a [**call**](/support/contact-us?lang=en&prov=bc&INTCMP=VAN_contact-us) 
10. Restarting your modem along with the above troubleshooting may only provide a temporary fix to your TELUS Wi-Fi speed problem. If the issue reoccurs, [**contact us**](https://www.telus.com/contact-us) so that we can find and fix the root cause of your problem
