How to activate or stop notifications using Data Manager in My Account

Automatic notifications help you manage your data usage in Canada.

About data usage notifications

Data notifications help track your use so you can adjust your data plan or usage if necessary.

Whether you use a feature phone, smartphone, tablet or a mobile Internet key, we will notify you when you're close to using all of the data included in your monthly rate plan or Data Add-on.

  • If you're using pay-per-use data, we'll notify you once you've used $10, $50, $100 and every $100 increment by default
  • If you have a data plan, we'll let you know when you've used 90% and 100% of the data included in your plan
  • Data plan notifications are set to SMS by default and you can setup email notification in Data Manager. You’ll receive the following details in the notification:
    • Percentage of data used in your monthly plan
    • Amount of data remaining in MB
    • Dollar amount in overage charges (if applicable)
    • End date of your bill cycle
  • If you're on a shareable data plan, all members on the plan will receive data usage notifications
  • If you're on a Flex Plan, you'll receive data notifications during each tier
  • If you’re using a feature phone or smartphone, you’ll receive free text messages to notify you about your data usage
  • If you’re using a mobile Internet key, you receive data notifications in your connection manager. You can receive your notifications via e-mail by changing your notification type in Data Manager
  • If you’re using a tablet, you can receive your notifications via e-mail by changing your notification type in Data Manager
  • The amount of data sent or received by a device is measured in kilobytes (KB) and is presented on your monthly invoice in megabytes (MB). 1024 KB = 1 MB. 1024 MB = 1 gigabyte (GB)
  • While data usage notifications are close to real-time, usage meters can be delayed by up to 6 hours. Share plans will reflect each person’s usage at various times and are subject to the same delays. All usage information is an approximate; please refer to your invoice for final charges

Setup Data Notifications

We recently improved notifications for those on shared plans. New features include:

  1. Log in to My Account
  2. Select Usage from the left side menu
  3. If you have multiple accounts select the one you would like to set up notification on
  4. Select Data Manager in the Data usage blocks and notifications box.
  5. Select the notifications that best suit your needs


Data notifications for shareable data plan users

We recently improved notifications for those on shared plans. New features include:

  • We'll let all members using your shareable data plan know when you've collectively used 90% and 100% of the data included in your plan
  • Just as with other data plans, SMS usage notifications are enabled by default. Notifications include:
    • Percentage of data used in your monthly shareable data plan
    • Amount of data remaining in MB
    • Dollar amount in overage charges (if applicable)
    • End date of your bill cycle
  • When you log in to My Account, your data usage dashboard will include individual data usage for each member on the plan. It will also show the combined amount of the data used among all members on the plan
  • If you're using pay-per-use data, we'll notify you individually once you've used $10, $50, $100, and every additional $100 increment

Increase your data plan

We offer a variety of voice and data plans, as well as data add-ons, with varying data limits. To change your data plan, log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.

Stop data notifications

Data notifications are free and you will receive them automatically. If you don't want to be notified about your data usage, you can opt out of receiving data notifications by using the Data Manager in your online account, or by contacting us.

Data Manager

Data manager lets you configure your data notification settings and blocks so that you can control how much data is used in your account and prevent unplanned usage charges. Depending upon your type of account, you may see different account management options when you log in.

To access Data Manager, log in to your TELUS account. Register if you don't have one.
