Changes to data usage notifications in 2018

Information on the enhancements being made to data usage notifications starting in February, 2018

Enhanced data notifications

TELUS is making enhancements to the default data notifications that are sent if you exceed the amount of data included in your plan. These enhancements will help you better manage your spending, especially if you’re managing multiple devices on your mobility account.

How notifications on additional data charges are changing

The enhanced data notification experience will take effect for your account when your next bill cycle begins after February 7, 2018. For example, if your bill cycle begins on the 22nd of every month, then these changes will come into effect for your account when your next bill cycle begins on February 22, 2018.

To prevent your account from incurring further data charges, TELUS currently blocks the data usage of an individual device if it reaches $50 (in Canada) and $100 (while roaming outside Canada) in additional pay-per-use data charges. The $50 and $100 blocks on additional data charges will now be based on the combined usage (including pay-per-use and data top-ups or roaming data passes) of all device users on the account. Unblocking data to use beyond these limits will also be at the account level, allowing all individuals to continue using data.

Using Data while in Canada

Effective for all bill cycles starting February 7, 2018 and later:

  • If the data included in your monthly plan is exceeded, all device users on the account will receive notifications when additional data charges on the account reach or exceed $20
  • If $50 of additional data charges across all device users on the account is reached, pay-per-use data will be blocked to prevent further pay-per-use data charges.
  • If an authorized user unblocks data, all devices on the account may continue to use pay-per-use data.
  • Additional data charges now include both pay-per-use data usage and the purchase of data top-ups.

Using Data when traveling outside of Canada

Effective for all bill cycles starting February 7, 2018 and later:

  • If you are outside Canada and using pay-per-use roaming data, all device users on the account will receive notifications when additional roaming data charges on the account reach or exceed $20
  • If $100 of roaming data charges across all device users on the account is reached, pay-per-use roaming data will be blocked to prevent any additional pay-per-use roaming data charges.
  • If an authorized user unblocks roaming data , all devices on the account may continue to use pay-per-use roaming data.
  • Roaming data charges include both pay-per-use data usage and the purchase of roaming passes that include data.
  • If you’re outside Canada and using Easy Roam, you will get notified about your data usage the same way you do when in Canada. Easy Roam daily fees do not count as roaming data charges.
