Enhanced data notifications

Information on changes to data notification

Enhanced data notifications are coming December, 2017

With the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission's (CRTC) changes to the Wireless Code coming into effect on December 1, 2017, TELUS is making enhancements to the default data notifications you receive when exceeding the amount of data included in your plan. These enhancements will help you better manage your spending, especially if you have multiple devices being used on your mobility account.

How default data notifications are changing in December, 2017

Currently, if you’re using pay-per-use data we will block data services and notify you when you reach $50 in Canadian pay-per-use data charges per line during your monthly billing cycle. If you’re travelling outside of Canada, we will block data services and notify you when you reach $100 in pay-per-use data roaming charges per line during your monthly billing cycle. All notifications are sent as a free SMS message by default, but you can opt to have them sent as email as well.

As of December 1, 2017, the $50 and $100 data spending caps will be based on the combined usage (including pay-per-use and data top-ups or data roaming add-ons) of all individuals listed on the account. Unblocking data beyond these limits will also be at the account level, allowing all individuals to continue using data. The table below summarizes the most important things to know about these changes:

How it works today How it works December 1, 2017
Using Data in Canada
  • When $50 of Canadian pay-per-use data charges are reached in a single monthly billing cycle, that individual line is blocked and notified with the option to unblock.
  • Additional data top up purchases and Canadian pay-per-use data charges count towards the $50 Canadian data spending cap.
  • If you decide to buy a $25 data top up, then your running total towards the $50 Canadian data spending cap is now $25*.
Using Data while travelling outside Canada
  • When $100 of data roaming pay-per-use charges are reached in a single monthly billing cycle, that individual line is blocked and notified with the option to unblock.
  • Travel pass purchases that include data count toward the $100 roaming data spending cap.
  • If your travel pass purchases and pay-per-use data roaming charges total $100 for a single monthly billing cycle, you will be blocked from incurring additional charges.
  • Easy Roam does not count towards the $100 roaming data spending cap.
Mobility Accounts with multiple devices
  • Each individual device accumulates pay-per-use data charges up until the $50 (Canada) and $100 (roaming) data spending caps.
  • Data service for the specific device that reaches the spending cap is blocked.
  • The individual user can unblock data service for their device only.
  • The $50 (Canada) and $100 (roaming) data spending caps are a summation of all applicable charges across all the individual devices on the account.
  • Once the data spending cap at the account level is reached, data service for all individual devices is blocked.
  • Each individual user is notified of the block. If the individual user is allowed to unblock data, they can reply to the notification to unblock data so all individual devices on the account can continue to use data.
  • See more information below on Customizing your data notification settings, which includes selecting the individual users who are allowed to unblock data.

Customizing your data notification settings

By logging into My Account you can customize which data usage and spending amounts will send you notifications. In addition, you can determine which devices

will receive the notifications as well as which ones you want to be able to unblock data to use beyond the spending limits. These features are available now and will continue to be available after these changes come into place this December.
