Installing your Smart Door Lock / Video on how to install your Smart Door Lock

Make sure you have the following items and tools before you begin the installation:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Ruler or tape measure
- Hammer and wood block (if using a drive in latch)

__Note__: Do not use an electric drill or an electric screwdriver to tighten screws. 

__Step 1: Check the door__

Make sure the corners are straight and the door opens and closes with ease. If the deadbolt does not align easily when closed, the Smart Door Lock may not work properly. Make sure the door closes properly before beginning Smart Door Lock installation.

__Step 2: Do you have an existing deadbolt?__

The Smart Door Lock replaces an existing deadbolt. If you do not have an existing deadbolt, additional carpentry work will be required to install one before the Smart Door Lock can be used.

__Note__: Smart Door Locks do not work with mortise cylinder locks, or a bolt attached to door knob/handle.

__Step 3: Check the door thickness__

Check the thickness of the door. The standard size will be between 1-⅜” or 35 mm and 1-¾” or 44 mm. The Smart Door Lock only works for doors that are up to 2” or 51 mm thick. If the door is more than 2” thick, up to 2 -½” or 64 mm, a thick door kit can be purchased externally from the manufacturer.

__Step 4: Check the latch__

The door jamb (the hole insert in the wall that the deadbolt slides into) must be large enough for the Smart Lock latch: 1” (25 mm) in diameter and 1” deep.

__Step 5: Measure the center of the door lock to door edge__

Confirm that the distance between the center of the door lock to the door edge is between 2-⅜” or 60 mm and 2-¾” or 70 mm. These dimensions are required for the Smart Door Lock.

Once you have verified that the door meets all the requirements, you can proceed to connecting the Smart Door Lock to your Control Panel. If the door does not meet all the requirements, you will need to find a carpenter to fix or modify the door to work with the Smart Door Lock.

Installing your Smart Door Lock / Pre-installation checklist

1. To begin, remove the battery pack from the interior of the lock and insert the batteries with the correct polarity. 2. Insert the battery pack back into the interior of the lock. You will hear a beep and see a red or orange light. When the light disappears, your lock is ready to be connected to the Control Panel. 4. 7. Select your __Door Lock__.
8. If installing on a Control Panel, ensure your Control Panel is unlocked on the home screen before continuing.
9. Select __Begin installation__.
10. Please wait while the system is preparing for installation. Once your system is ready to add your device, it will show "Complete".
11. Select __Next__. Your Control Panel will begin to search for your device.
12. Press the learn button, which is the __"A"__ button on the lock (the device should be within 1 foot of the Control Panel during this time and must remain stationary for 60 seconds).
    - __Note__: If you have a Weiser Home Connect 620 lock, you may be prompted to enter a 5 digit PIN. See below for the location of this PIN on the back of your lock. 13. Your Control Panel will indicate that your device has been added to the network successfully.
14. Enter a name for your device and select __Next__. Congratulations, you have successfully added your new device to your account.
15. Select __Add more__ to install additional devices or select __Done__ at the top right corner to complete the installation process.

Installing your Smart Door Lock / Installing your device using the mobile app

__Tip__: Avoid mixing up screws from the old door lock and the new door lock as this will cause issues with the installation. Make sure you are using the correct screws by keeping the old and new sets of screws separate. Also, note the type of screw that you should be using according to the installation instructions.

__Step 1: Adjust latch__
Determine which latch you will need to install -- a standard drive in latch or a latch with a faceplate.

Adjust the latch length if needed. If the center of the bore hole to the edge of the door is 2-⅜” (60 mm), you do not need to adjust the latch length. If the distance is 2-¾” (70 mm), adjust the latch length by turning it 180 degrees clockwise to extend.

Make sure the D shape is facing up and the latch is extended. Then, insert the latch into the opening on the side of the door. Secure the latch into place with the wood screws provided using a Phillips screwdriver.

__Step 2: Attach keypad to the door__
For a 1-½” (38 mm) hole, simply attach the keypad by threading the cable underneath the latch and making sure the D shape on the shaft extending from the keypad is facing up.

For a 2-⅛” (54 mm) hole, attach the adapter before attaching the keypad to the door.

Next, take the back plate and attach to the other side of the door hole. Thread the cable through the center hole of the back plate and slide cable down to the smaller slot underneath.

Insert screws into the back plate and give it a few turns by hand first before using a Phillips screwdriver to tighten the back plate to the door. Before tightening the screws completely, check that both the keypad on the front and the mounting plate on the back are square to the edge of the door. Insert the key into the lock and turn a few times to ensure the latch extends and retracts without any resistance.

Once you have confirmed the lock is operating smoothly, leave the key in the door with the latch extended and finish tightening the screws in the back plate.

__Step 3: Install interior lock__
Remove the battery pack from the interior lock. Connect the cable from the interior lock to the cable coming from the keypad. Tuck the cable into the back of the lock.

Make sure the rounded part of the D shape on the shaft from the interior lock is facing up. It should match the D shape of the shaft coming from the keypad. Slide the lock into the back plate.

Secure the lock to the back plate by inserting the screws on both sides and tightening.

__Step 4: Perform door handing process__
This step lets the lock know if it’s a right-handed door or a left-handed door. Press and hold the lock button on the keypad while inserting the battery pack. Continue to hold the button when the latch bolt starts moving as it goes through the calibration process. You will hear a beep followed by the latch bolt extending and retracting again. Then, another beep will sound, and after ten seconds two long beeps will sound. You can now let go. The door handing process is complete.

If the latch bolt does not extend and retract on its own when the battery pack is installed, remove the battery pack, wait 15 seconds and attempt this step again.

__Step 5: Attach inside lock cover__
Match up the triangle on the cover to the triangle on the interior lock (see illustration below).

After attaching the cover to the lock, secure in place with the three screws - one on each side and one at the bottom. Be careful to use only the included blunt ended screws. Use of pointed screws will damage the lock.

__Step 6: Install strike plate__
Install the strike plate if needed where the door latch extends to lock the door.
That’s it. Your Smart Door Lock is ready to use.

10. With the Smart Light Bulb inserted in a light socket or lamp, turn the light bulb power on.[br][br]__Note__: Some models of Smart Light Bulb may flash twice when connected to power for the first time. This is normal, and indicates the Smart Light Bulb is ready for pairing.
11. Select __Next__. Your Control Panel or Automation Hub will now search for your device.

12. You may be asked to enter a PIN or DSK number. If you have a five-digit code, enter all five digits. If you have a 40-digit code, enter the first five digits.

13. The Smart Light Bulb should flash twice to indicate that it has been paired.
14. If you have a Control Panel, your screen will show a message indicating that your device has been added to the network successfully. If you have an Automation Hub, the Z-Wave LED will flash quickly, then turn solid to indicate that the device has been added to the network successfully.
15. If the app does not recognize the light bulb in 60 seconds or the light bulb does not flash, repeat the steps above.
16. Enter a name for your device and select __Next__. You can also choose to continue without renaming your device.

17. Select __Add more__ to install additional devices or select __Done__ at the top right corner to complete the installation process.

__Important__: The light socket or lamp must always be in the __On__ position to prevent malfunction notifications on your system. Brightness can be adjusted through your TELUS SmartHome app or Control Panel. 

Installing your Smart Light Bulb / Installing your device using the mobile app

Once your Smart Light Bulb is installed in your desired light socket or lamp, the light bulb can be turned on/off and the brightness level can be adjusted remotely via your TELUS SmartHome app or via the web portal. If you have a Control Panel, you can also control the Smart Light Bulb using the on-board screen and menu options.

__My lightbulb switch won’t stay in the "On" position. What should I do?__

Some models of Smart Light Bulb come with an included switch blocker. The switch blocker can be used to lock your light switch when it's in the "On" position. This will work for traditional style light switches and flat switches.

8. Select __Next__.
9. Please wait while the system prepares for installation. Once your system is ready to add your device, it will show __Complete__.
10.	Select __Next__. Your Control Panel or Automation Hub will begin to search for your device.

__Smart Plug - Appliance__

The Smart Plug - Appliance can be used to control any electronic appliance that can be powered off, or for light bulbs or lamps that do not have dimming capabilities. 

After the device is installed, the connected appliance can then be toggled on/off remotely through your TELUS SmartHome app or via your Control Panel. You can also create rules or schedules to control your devices.

__Smart Plug - Dimmer__

The Smart Plug - Dimmer should only be used to control lamps with a dimmable light bulb. Do not use on circuits with in-wall dimmer switches or with smart light bulbs as they could affect performance or damage the device. After the device is installed, the lamp can be turned on/off and the brightness level can be adjusted remotely through your TELUS SmartHome app or via your Control Panel.

To install the Smart Thermostat, we recommend using the following tools:
- Needle nose pliers
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Power drill
- Pencil

Installing your Smart Thermostat / Pre-installation checklist


__Step 1: Test the current system__
Verify that the heating and/or cooling system is operating properly before you try to install the new thermostat.

Do not test the system by shorting electric terminals at the furnace or air conditioner. This may damage the thermostat.

__Step 2: Check wiring to confirm low voltage thermostat system__
__Caution__: Verify that the system is 24 VAC. If the old system is labelled as 120 or 240 volts or has wire nuts, the system is high voltage. Do not install the thermostat to a high voltage system. For more information, check out the device’s [__product manual__](https://assets.ctfassets.net/9mt4r6ro1ay9/6no8f8KLFHAUEVObopHVB8/c69bec9b19e13e0dbce9eaa9f594264b/Thermostat-Intelligent-2019-en.pdf) or scroll to the FAQs below for a breakdown of non-compatible installation options.

__Identifying high voltage system__
- It has 2-4 thick, 14 gauge wires coming out of the back of the thermostat
- Wires connect with wire nuts to corresponding wires coming out of the wall
- It is labelled 110v, 115v or 240v

__Identifying low voltage system__
- It will have between 2-9 thin, 18 gauge wires that come from the wall and connect to the thermostat terminals.
- Wire terminals will have labels such as C, O, W, W2, Y, Y2, R, RC, RH, G, etc.

__Step 3: Turn power off heating and cooling__
Turn all heating and cooling systems off. This can be done at the circuit breaker or you can turn off the power to the furnace at a switch nearby. Use a voltage detector to make sure there is no live current.

__Caution__: Do not remove the existing thermostat until power has been turned off at the circuit breaker.

__Warning__: You can blow a transformer by not shutting off the HVAC/Furnace when changing thermostats. If you touch the C and R wires together you can blow the transformer or a fuse.

It is unlikely, but you can also burn up a thermostat by plugging in the wrong wires into the wrong terminals. Make sure you do not match color.

Also, make sure you don’t plug in high voltage (thick black wires) into the thermostat as this can burn up the thermostat.

__Step 4: Remove the thermostat cover__
Remove the cover from the existing thermostat. Do not disconnect the wires yet.

__Tip__: Take another picture of the wires to document connections for easy reference. Do not disconnect wires before labelling them.

__Step 5: Label all existing wires__
Label all existing wires, one at a time, with the labels provided. Make sure the wires are labelled correctly. If you have an unidentified wire, it may be necessary to identify the wire where it connects to the heating or air conditioning equipment.

__Step 6: Remove the old thermostat__
Loosen the screws that are holding the wires in place and use your needle nose pliers if needed to disconnect all the wires. The wires might be tightly connected to the existing thermostat and require extra force to remove. If you do not have enough slack to label the wires, remove them one at a time and label them as you remove them. Unscrew the base plate from the wall to remove the old thermostat.

__Tip__: Remember to secure the wires so they don’t fall into the wall. You can do this by wrapping the wires around a pencil.

__Step 7: Install new baseplate__
Use the bubble level provided on the back plate as a guide. Mark where the screws will go with a pencil through the screw holes on the back plate.

__Tips__:
- If necessary, use the trim plate to cover up any marks or holes left from the old thermostat. Attach the trim plate before securing the back plate to the wall
- Drill holes with 3/16” drill bit to tap in the drywall anchors for added support

__Note__: Before drilling, check that you are not drilling into electrical wires.

__Step 8: Connect the wires__
Reconnect the wires to the new thermostat by matching the wire label to the corresponding terminal. When inserting the wire, you do not need to press down on the terminal tab. Once the wire is fully inserted, give it a slight pull and it should be locked in place. Take a picture for reference later. This information will be needed when configuring the thermostat.

__Tips__:
- Make sure each wire is stripped to ⅛” before connecting
- If you make a mistake connecting the wrong wire to a terminal, press down on the terminal tab with a pen to release the wire

__Note__: Do not press too hard on the terminal tab and use your pliers to remove the wire.

- If you have a R wire, connect it to RH
- If you have a RH and RC wire, remove the black jumper in the lower left corner of the back plate terminal board with needle nose pliers (see figure below)
- If you have extra wires do not install them in the new thermostat. Please contact your local HVAC professional for additional assistance

__Note__: The C wire is not needed to complete a thermostat installation. It provides a constant 24 voltage to the thermostat. If the C wire is there, then we use it with the batteries as a backup.

If there is no C wire, we can use the Smart thermostat with just the batteries. There are many cases where older houses only have the RH and W wire. The thermostat will just be running on the batteries itself and will not drain the batteries. They will last up to a year maybe longer depending on usage.

__Step 9: Install the batteries__
The thermostat can be powered by batteries or 24 VAC. If a wall transformer is used to power the thermostat, connect between C and RH. Ensure the batteries are installed following the specified polarity markings on the thermostat.

__Step 10: Attach the Smart Thermostat__
Verify that any excess wire is tucked back into the wall to allow room for the thermostat to sit flush against the back plate. Press the thermostat body firmly into the back plate mounted to the wall. Ensure that the pins on the body are correctly aligned with the header attached to the terminal board on the back plate. Failure to do so could cause damage to the thermostat.

__Step 11: Turn power back on__
Restore power to all the heating and cooling systems. This can be done at the circuit breaker.

__Step 12: Connect your Smart Thermostat to the Control Panel or Automation Hub__
Follow the appropriate steps below for connecting the smart thermostat to the main control panel or hub depending on which system you are working with.

5. If installing on a Control Panel, ensure your Control Panel is unlocked on the home screen before continuing.
6. Select __Begin installation__.
7. Please wait while the system is preparing for installation. Once your system is ready to add your device, it will show "Complete".
8. Select __Next__. Your Control Panel or Automation Hub will now search for your device.
9. With the thermostat installed and powered, press the mode button until the thermostat is in "Off" mode. Neither the "Heat" nor the "Cool" icon should be lit.
10. Next, press and hold the down button until the "Radio" icon flashes. When the "Radio" icon becomes solid, the thermostat has been successfully added.

1. On your TELUS SmartHome app Home screen, select __Thermostat__.
2. Select __Set up Thermostat__.
3. Enter a unique name for the device (e.g. living room thermostat).
4. Select __Next__.
5. Choose whether the system uses gas, oil or electric heat. Then select __OK__.
6. Refer to the picture you took during the installation to select the correct wired terminals. Tap __Next__.
7. Continue to the next screen if you did not have to remove the cover to see the wiring. 
8. Confirm that the settings are correct. Select __OK__ when done.
9. Check that all fields are correct and select __Next__ when you’re ready to send the configurations to the thermostat.

__Can I install a Smart Thermostat in my home?__
Our Smart Thermostats are not eligible with the following configurations:
- Electric baseboard heaters/ thermostats
- Systems that use a heat pump thermostat
- Floor heating thermostats (water-electric)
- High-powered Lennox thermostats

__How many Smart Thermostats am I allowed to install with my system?__
You can install up to 10 Smart Thermostats with your system.

__Can I create thermostat schedules with my Smart Thermostat?__
Yes. Thermostat schedules are used to automatically control the temperature in a home to help save on energy costs while you are away or to help keep you comfortable while you are home. Thermostat schedules can be created through the web portal or via the TELUS SmartHome app. Learn how to [__configure a thermostat schedule__](https://www.telus.com/en/support/article/configure-thermostat-schedule). 

__My thermostat is displaying N/A instead of the temperature.__
Typically, the thermostat may show N/A instead of the temperature when the thermostat is newly installed and has not reported a temperature yet. To resolve this behaviour:
1. Turn the thermostat on, and then change the temperature by a few degrees. Shortly after, it should report its temperature
2. If the thermostat still does not update its temperature after a few minutes, delete the Smart Thermostat using these instructions on how to [__remove an automation device__](https://www.telus.com/en/support/article/remove-smart-device-from-system) and then re-add the device

__What are the available schedule setting increments and minimum intervals for thermostat schedules?__
Thermostat schedule changes can be set on the hour or half hour (e.g. 08:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:30, etc.). The minimum interval between set points is 1 hour.

__How does a manual thermostat change affect the thermostat’s schedule?__
If a thermostat on a schedule is changed manually (at the thermostat or through the TELUS SmartHome app), it overrides the schedule until the next scheduled change happens.

__What thermostat events can trigger a notification?__
A notification can be triggered by:
- A non-scheduled change of target temperature
- Change of thermostat mode
- Threshold temperature excess (and restoration)
- Extreme temp mode activation

__Note__: Scheduled setpoint changes do not trigger notifications and are not reported in your event history.

__Can I control my low and high fan settings?__ 
No. Low and high fan settings are not controllable from your TELUS SmartHome Security system.

11.	Your Control Panel will indicate that your device has been added to the network successfully. Your Automation Hub’s Z-Wave LED will flash quickly, then turn solid to indicate that the device has been added to the network successfully.
12.	Enter a name for your device and select __Next__. Congratulations, you have successfully added your new device to your account.
13.	Select __Add more__ to install additional devices or select __Done__ at the top right corner to complete the installation process.

Installing your Smart Garage Door Opener/ Installing your device using the mobile app

1.	Unplug the Smart Garage Door Opener while you are physically installing
2.	Attach the tilt sensor mounting plate to the top panel of the garage door 
    - __Note__: Use double-sided tape (make sure to wipe down the surface first for maximum stickiness) or the two mounting screws supplied. Drill 1/16” pilot holes if required. Make sure the arrows on the mounting plate point up.
3.	Activate the sensor by removing the battery protection pull strip
4.	Snap the sensor onto the mounting plate. Make sure the arrow on the sensor is facing up
5.	Mount the Smart Garage Door Opener above the garage door opener or to the garage opener’s metal brackets with the mounting bracket 
  __Next, mount your Smart Garage Door Opener to the ceiling above your garage opener__:
6.	Use the four screws and anchors provided to mount the device above the garage door opener
7.	Place the device on the ceiling and mark the four holes with a screwdriver or pencil
8.	Pre-drill holes into the ceiling where you marked with a 3/16” drill bit
9.	Tap in anchors gently into pre-drilled holes with a hammer
10.	Mount the Smart Garage Door Opener to the ceiling with the screws

__To mount the device to the metal brackets with the mounting bracket, follow these steps:__

2.	Use the nuts and bolts provided to attach the bracket and device to the garage door hardware. __Next, connect the wires:__
1.	Connect the wires from the Smart Garage Door Opener to the push button wall console terminals on yourgarage door opener. The terminals may be named "PWC", "WC", "PB", "Push button", or "Red and white.” Terminal names and locations vary by model
2.	Plug the power cord into the power input jack
3.	Remove the screw from the 120VAC outlet faceplate. Secure the retaining bracket to the faceplate with the provided screw. __Connecting the Smart Garage Door Opener to the garage door mechanism:__
1.	Restore power to your garage door opener
2.	Connect the system by using the garage door opener’s push button to manually open and close the door
3.	Use your Control Panel or SmartHome Security app to activate the garage door opener
4.	Your Smart Garage Door Opener will now beep and flash for 5 seconds before the door moves. Be sure to stay clear of the door during this time

__Why does my garage door not completely open or close after I send a command?__

If your garage door does not completely open or close after you send a remote command (i.e. through the Control Panel or via the TELUS SmartHome app), the Smart Garage Door Opener will allow you to try and send the command one more time. If the second attempt fails, the device will go into lockout mode.

If your device is in lockout mode, it will not accept any remote commands. Unlock the device by activating the door from the push button wall console instead.

Once you activate the door via the push button wall console, another command cannot be sent for 30 seconds. This eliminates the chance of the garage door “bouncing” and possibly damaging the Smart Garage Door Opener.

Installing your Smart Garage Door Opener / List of compatible garage doors

The Smart Garage Door Opener may be incompatible or may experience issues with models that draw power from the garage door opener (i.e. for LCD screens and lights). 

If you have already installed our Smart Garage Door Opener and are experiencing issues, try removing the wall control and testing a remote command from your TELUS SmartHome app. If the command is successful, we recommend replacing the wall control with a basic unit.
