Ionization sensing technology is generally more sensitive than photoelectric sensing technology at detecting small particles, which tend to be produced in greater amounts by flaming fires. These types of fires consume combustible materials rapidly and spread quickly. Sources of fast, flaming fires may include paper burning in a wastebasket or a grease fire in the kitchen.

Photoelectric sensing technology is generally more sensitive than ionization sensing technology at detecting large particles, which tend to be produced in greater amounts by smouldering fires. These types of fires may smoulder for hours before bursting into flame. Sources of smouldering fires may include cigarettes burning in couches or bedding.

Combination alarms typically include both and provide better detection.

For maximum protection, install on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, outside sleeping areas, and in hallways. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and areas near heating appliances.

It’s important that you check batteries consistently and replace your detector batteries every 6 months. A good reminder is to change your detector batteries every time you change your clock for Daylight Saving Time.

You will notice a high-pitched chirping noise coming from your alarm if the batteries need to be replaced.
