VoLTE (Voice over LTE)
How to place and receive Voice over LTE calls on the TELUS network
Questions about network changes in Winnipeg and Brandon
Here is a list of questions and answers related to the changes coming to the TELUS mobile network in Winnipeg and Brandon on March 16, 2021.
What is happening in Manitoba?
A network sharing agreement in the cities of Winnipeg and Brandon will be ending on March 16, 2021. As a result, there will be a reduction in HSPA coverage in these two cities. While the HSPA network will still be available, the reduction in HSPA coverage will affect your mobile experience with your device, especially if you're indoors. There will be no changes to the LTE network.
Is there anything I can do so I won't be affected?
Yes, you can turn on LTE and VoLTE on your device. See instructions below on how to activate VoLTE on your mobile device.
Am I going to lose all services?
No, your HSPA phone will still work but it may not work in all the places that it does now. The loss of service may be particularly noticeable while indoors. There will be no change to the LTE network. Note that the change will occur in Winnipeg and Brandon only. The rest of Manitoba will be unaffected.
Will there be any changes anywhere else?
No, the change will occur in Winnipeg and Brandon only. The rest of Manitoba will be unaffected.
What is VoLTE?
VoLTE stands for Voice over LTE and is a voice service over the data network. It is the same as the voice service that you have been using with some additional features such as faster call set up times, enhanced voice quality and the ability to browse high speed data while on a voice call.
Is VoLTE more expensive?
No, there is no additional charge to make voice calls using VoLTE.
Do I have to pay data charges when I use VoLTE?
No, you will only be charged for your voice minutes. You will not be additionally charged for data.
Can anyone use VoLTE?
In order to use VoLTE, you must be on a postpaid plan and have a VoLTE device. You can check if your device is supported by looking in the Supported VoLTE devices list below.
How do I turn on VoLTE?
See the How to activate LTE/VoLTE section below for further instructions.
Will my current phone work on VoLTE?
Most new phones will work. Older phones or phones sold outside of Canada may not be able to connect to the VoLTE network. For a complete list of supported devices see the Supported VoLTE devices list below. If your phone is not listed, dial *611 from your TELUS device for support to upgrade your phone.
Why can't I use my current device?
Older devices don't have the technology necessary to use LTE and VoLTE and won't be able to connect. Some newer devices also won't be able to connect to the VoLTE network if they are purchased outside of Canada as they won't be compatible with Canadian settings. For a list of all supported devices see the Supported VoLTE devices list below. If your phone is not listed, dial *611 from your TELUS device for support to upgrade your phone.
What if I'm on a prepaid plan?
Unfortunately, there is no prepaid support for VoLTE currently, but it is planned for the future. You will have to switch to a postpaid plan in order to use VoLTE. Dial *611 from your prepaid device to switch to a postpaid plan and enjoy a superior network experience.
What is VoLTE?
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is the next evolution in wireless calling. It allows customers with a compatible phone to place and receive calls over the TELUS LTE network instead of the HSPA network.
Most TELUS customers with devices that are VoLTE-enabled can automatically take advantage of VoLTE, once your device has been updated with the latest software. All of your calls will be seamlessly carried over the TELUS LTE network as long as you are in a VoLTE-capable LTE coverage area.
With VoLTE you’ll get:
- Simultaneous use of voice and LTE data
- High definition sound quality when calling another VoLTE-enabled device
- Faster call setup time
- More innovative solutions, as customers will have access to next generation services
Previously, data was carried over LTE when you weren't on a voice call. If you were on a voice call, then your data was transmitted using the slower 3G speeds. Now with VoLTE, your data will be carried over LTE even when you’re on a voice call.
How do I use VoLTE?
Making a VoLTE call is simple. To make or receive a VoLTE call, you'll need to:
- Use a VoLTE-compatible phone (all new devices sold by TELUS and most new devices sold in Canada will work on the TELUS VoLTE network. A complete list of the supported devices can be found in the FAQ section at the bottom of the page)
- Be on a Postpaid account to use VoLTE (currently VoLTE is not available on Prepaid accounts)
- Be in a VoLTE-enabled coverage area
Where is VoLTE available?
VoLTE is available across Canada. VoLTE E911 is available in all VoLTE-enabled areas.
In areas where VoLTE E911 is not available, customers are still able to make standard 911 calls.
How to activate LTE/VoLTE on your mobile device

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I have to pay more for using VoLTE?
No. All your voice usage will be billed according to your TELUS plan, so you won't be using any of your monthly data allowance.
Does VoLTE use up my data?
No. Making voice calls with VoLTE will be treated as a regular voice call and will not affect your data usage.
Can I roam with VoLTE?
VoLTE Roaming services are now available in the US and select international countries enabling TELUS customers to place and receive calls over the LTE network. If there is no VoLTE coverage or if customers don’t have a VoLTE enabled device, customers will continue roaming on the HSPA network.
- VoLTE Roaming rates will be the same as current HSPA Roaming rates
- Some short-codes and toll-free numbers may not work while Roaming
- While roaming internationally, customers are recommended to use “plus dialling” for making local and international calls. Dial plus (+) followed by country code and the number
For example, to make local calls while roaming in Japan (Country Code = 81), dial + (by long-pressing 0) followed by 81, i.e. +81-XXXXX-XXXXX. To make calls back to Canada (Country Code = 1), dial + followed by 1, i.e. +1-XXX-XXX-XXXX.
Will my device work on the TELUS VoLTE network?
All new devices sold by TELUS in 2018 or later and most sold in Canada will work on the TELUS VoLTE network. If you aren’t sure how old your device is or didn’t buy it from TELUS you can verify in the list below.
Depending on the device model you will have to check the model number or the IMEI to verify if your device is compatible with TELUS’ VoLTE network.
You can find this information in Settings > About Phone on Android devices.
