What to expect at a virtual counselling session

Mental Health · Mar 10, 2022

Life causes many stressors that can impact our wellbeing. At times, we might feel resilient and capable of working through the challenges we are facing. But at other times, we might wonder how we will get through the day.

Counselling can be a valuable resource for life’s daily struggles and long-term challenges.  Counsellors can provide a safe and confidential space for emotional support, learning coping strategies, and emotional healing. Even when we know that counselling could be helpful it can be hard to reach out for the first session.

Here is information from Lead Clinical Counsellor Lindsay Killiam, on what you can expect in your first counselling session on the TELUS Health MyCare™ app.

  • The first session usually focuses on building the counselling relationship, identifying the issue(s), building trust, and setting the framework for moving forward. A Counsellor can help you explore your background and what contributed to the way you are feeling.

  • The Counsellor will help to identify priorities and the changes you would like to see in your life. The session will typically wrap up with resources, tools, or homework to help you get started.
  • You are in the driver’s seat and the Counsellor you choose is your copilot. You tell them where you want to go and they will read the map to explore the different directions to get there.

If you need a helping hand or someone to talk to, take the first step by booking an appointment with a Counsellor on the
