Billing and understanding how you will be charged while travelling

Learn about roaming charges, how to avoid unexpected roaming charges while travelling or near the US border, travelling across Canada, and understanding roaming charges on your monthly bill

How and when you will be charged for roaming

The information in the tables below summarize how roaming charges will apply for each specific type of usage, depending on the travel coverage you have for your plan (e.g., Easy Roam, Roaming Pass or no coverage/pay-per-use rates).

Tip: If you’re looking to avoid roaming charges altogether, simply turn data roaming OFF in your mobile device’s settings and refrain from making or answering calls, and sending any outgoing texts. Receiving incoming texts will never result in any roaming charges, so long as data roaming is turned OFF to avoid using mobile data for any pictures or videos that they may contain.

For more information on how to turn data roaming on and off in your mobile device’s settings, view the support article: Getting set up to travel and tips for travelling with your mobile device

Monitoring roaming usage

Data usage with Easy Roam and roaming passes can be monitored using the My TELUS mobile app or My TELUS online. For more information on monitoring data usage and the data notifications you will receive while travelling, view the support article: Getting set up to travel and tips for travelling with your mobile device

Text message and voice minute usage cannot be monitored while travelling and a summary of your texts and minutes will only be available on your bill.

A summary of any roaming pay-per-use usage will only be available on your bill.

Roaming on a cruise ship or in-flight

Easy Roam, Canada-US plans and roaming passes do not cover you on cruise ships or in-flight. Usage on cruise ships or in-flight will always be charged at $0.60 per text, $7.00 per minute and data usage will be blocked.

Understanding roaming charges on your bill

Easy Roam

Easy Roam will always appear on your monthly bill under “Add-ons” as a free service, since it is free to have on your account and the charges only activate when you travel and use your mobile device.

When Easy Roam is activated in an eligible destination, the total daily charges will appear under the “Usage charges” section of your monthly bill:

  • The $7 per day fee will appear as “Easy Roam US” with the total number of days that Easy Roam was used and the total amount of daily charges.
  • The $12 per day fee will appear as “Easy Roam INTL” with the total number of days that Easy Roam was used and the total amount of daily charges.

The total Easy Roam charges on your bill may be less than the number of days used multiplied by the daily fee amount (e.g., $7 or $12). This will only happen if you reach the bill cycle cap on Easy Roam charges of $100 (US) or $150 (International). For more information about the monthly bill cap on Easy Roam charges, view the support article: Easy Roam: Frequently asked questions.

The record of each daily Easy Roam charge also appears in the Airtime Details section of your bill. The date and time that each daily Easy Roam fee was activated will appear in your list of call history as “99999 ROAM/VOY” along with the amount of the daily Easy Roam charge (e.g., $7 or $12).

If you called destinations outside Canada or the country you were currently located in when the call was made, then the pay-per-use charges for these calls will appear as additional Roaming airtime charges as their own line item that is separate from the Easy Roam charges. This also applies if you called any other phone numbers that are not included in Easy Roam.

Roaming Pass

Your roaming pass will appear in the “Add-ons” section of your monthly bill. If your usage exceeds the included minutes, messages or data included in your roaming pass, roaming overage charges will appear in the “usage charges” section.

  • 30-day roaming passes are valid for 30 days from the day of purchase and will expire at 11:59 pm MST. Roaming pass fees are charged in full on the bill cycle they were purchased on, and the charges are not prorated if you have the pass removed from your account by an agent before it expires.
  • You may have additional usage charges if your roaming pass has expired after 30 days while you are still travelling. If your pass has expired, you will be charged the applicable pay-per-use rates unless your purchase a new pass.
  • You may have additional usage charges if you incurred pay-per-use charges during your trip before adding a travel pass
  • Outgoing SMS messages that exceed what’s included in your pass are charged as 1 SMS = 160 characters. Incoming SMS is free.
  • International travel charges may take up to 90 days to appear on your bill
  • US data is charged by the MB and is prorated to the closest KB. International Data is charged by the MB and is prorated to the closest 20KB

Roaming pay-per-use

If you use your device without any travel coverage, any pay-per-use minutes, outgoing messages and data will appear in the “usage charges” section of your monthly bill.

  • Calling minutes, messages or data used while travelling are not deducted from your monthly rate plan allotment
  • International travel charges may take up to 90 days to appear on your bill
  • US data is charged by the MB and is prorated to the closest KB. International Data is charged by the MB and is prorated to the closest 20KB
  • Incoming SMS is free
  • Outgoing SMS is charged as 1 SMS = 160 characters
Search your travel destination at telus.com/travel to confirm the applicable pay-per-use rates.

Travelling across Canada and avoiding charges close to the US border

Avoiding roaming charges when close to the US border

Sometimes if you are close enough to the US border and the signal from neighbouring US networks is stronger than the TELUS network, your device could automatically connect to a US network as if you are roaming. If this happens, any usage may accidentally be billed as roaming. In addition, you will likely receive a Welcome SMS notification that makes it seem like you are in the US.

Here are some tips to avoid accidental roaming charges when close to the US border:

1. Turn data roaming off in your mobile device’s settings
Most devices regularly consume data through apps that run in the background and features used by apps, like location services. So switching off data roaming when close to the US border will help ensure you don’t encounter unexpected roaming data charges or activation of the Easy Roam daily fee if you ever accidentally connect to a US mobile network. For instructions on how to manage data roaming in your device’s settings, view the support article: Getting setup to travel and tips for travelling with your mobile device.

2. Manually select TELUS as your mobile network operator
Your device is set to automatically connect to the TELUS network while in Canada, however, to ensure seamless service if you travel to the US this setting will also pick up the applicable US network whenever its stronger. So if you are constantly connecting to a US network while still in Canada, you can manually select the TELUS network in your device’s mobile network settings to help avoid this. If you opt for a manual selection of the TELUS network, remember that you will need to switch back to the automatic network selection setting if you ever decide to roam in the US or internationally to ensure your service will work.

For information on how to manually select your network operator in your device’s settings, view the support article: Troubleshoot mobile device issues while travelling.

Travelling across Canada

The TELUS network covers you nationwide across Canada, so using your mobile device in different cities and provinces across Canada will not incur any roaming charges. You can access your monthly data across Canada without incurring roaming charges, and you can text Canadian phone numbers from anywhere across the country while on the TELUS network. If your monthly plan includes nationwide calling, then you can also call Canadian phone numbers from anywhere across the country.

Note: Calling or texting premium/subscription based phone numbers is always subject to the applicable charges for using that service, no matter where you are located.

Travelling across Canada with a local calling plan

If your monthly rate plan includes local calling minutes, then the Canadian long distance rate will apply for each minute of usage if the call is made outside of your local calling area. Your local calling area depends on the home location of your phone number’s area code, your mobile device’s physical location and whether you are making an outgoing or incoming call. The example in the table below illustrates how local calling plans work while travelling in Canada:

Your Phone Number Area Code is local to: You are physically located in:Type of callThe other phone number’s area code is local to:Will you be charged Canadian long distance fees?
Vancouver, BCToronto, ONOutgoing
(e.g., call is made by you)
Toronto, ONNo, this is a local call.
Vancouver, BCYes
Incoming (e.g., call is answered by you) Toronto, ONYes
