Make sure you have adequate finances to support yourself and your family for the first few months:

• Estimate your monthly expenditures, including rent and other living expenses. Monthly expenses can include rent, Insurance (health, car, home), taxes and other paycheck deductions, utilities, telecommunications

• See if you can open a Canadian bank International account from your home country before you leave. Or plan for non-cash financial instruments like funds transfers, international money orders and Demand Drafts from your home country

• Order enough Canadian currency to last until you can open a bank account

Remember, if you carry more than $10,000 cash or cash equivalent into Canada, you have to declare it at time of arrival to the Canadian Border Services Agency.

Consider travel insurance if your trip is a connecting one with one or more stops, or someone in your family is predisposed.

• Hospitals in some countries may not treat patients who don't have coverage or cash to cover medical treatment

• Travel insurance can help with compensation for flight delays/cancellations and lost luggage. Be sure to read all the coverage/non coverage provisions

Create 2 copies of a list of household /personal items you are bringing with you. Divide the list into 2 sections: one for items that are accompanying you, and one for those that are following later.

• Be prepared to disclose any funds you plan to bring with you

• If you are able to get a international driving license, learn Canadian driving rules and road signs

• Plan for temporary housing (rental /friends) to stay in the city of your landing when you arrive

• Since the weather is going to be different, bring along clothes for each season. It will also help save money for the first few months

Ensure all your documents are in order before you leave for Canada:

• Passport for each member of the family, which should not be expiring in the next 6 months

• Immigrant visa/travel document, for each member of your family, which is required to enter Canada

• Birth certificates, marriage certificates, transcript of all educational achievements, copies of medical records, work references

• Drivers license if you have one. If possible get an international driving license/permit from your home country until you are able to get a Canadian driver’s license

Credential Assessment

You should have your skills credentials assessed

• To work in a trade or skill or to further upgrade your skills by studying, you will need to have your credential assessed

• As a foreign skilled worker, your Educational Credential Assessments (ECAs) are required

Academic Credentials

If you would like to further your education skills in Canada, you should get your academic credentials assessed.
