Make sure your phone is not off the hook. If you have multiple phones, verify that they are all properly connected, hung up and that the cables are firmly engaged
If you are using a cordless telephone, make sure that the battery is charged and the base is plugged in
Make sure your other devices (answering machine, fax, computer modem, alarm system, etc.) are plugged in.
No dial tone on one device
If the issue is on a single set, you first need to identify if the issue is caused by the phone, the phone jack or the phone cable. Try the following steps, checking for a dial tone after each step:
Connect the phone using
a different phone cable
Connect the phone to
a different jack
Connect
a different phone to the original jack
.
No dial tone on multiple devices
If none of your business devices have a dial tone and there are no outages in your area, the issue is likely with the lines on site. You can perform the following steps to try to force a line reset:
Disconnect all equipment (including fax machines, modems, splitters, etc.) from every phone jack
Leave everything unplugged for
at least 60 seconds
Connect your most basic telephone, preferably a corded one
Check for dial tone. If the dial tone returns, reconnect your equipment one piece at a time and check for dial tone after each addition
If you lose dial tone again, unplug the most recently connected piece of equipment from the jack. It’s likely causing the issue and you may want to have it checked
