Diversity and Inclusion

At TELUS, we are committed to promoting and celebrating diversity and inclusion within our team, our company and the communities where we live, work and serve.

The power of diversity and inclusion

At TELUS, we honour individuality and celebrate the diversity within our team, our company and the communities where we live, work and serve. Our vision is to be a global leader in diversity and inclusion, growing our diverse talented team and inclusive culture and strengthening our ability to connect for good.

Our team

Diverse teams lead the way to innovation. Leveraging different perspectives, experiences and ways of thinking allows us to deliver better insights, decisions, and solutions. Embracing our individuality, and leveraging diversity of thought is an important part of the amazing culture we have built as an organization.

Team member resource groups

Our six Team Member Resource groups support over 6,000 members, and together play an important role in advancing inclusion within our organization and throughout the communities where we live, work and serve around the world. These groups offer mentoring, networking, peer support, volunteering and coaching opportunities to members. Our resource groups also enable us to better understand the needs and preferences of our diverse customers, helping TELUS become one of the world’s most customer recommended companies.

Our approach

We’ve made diversity and inclusion a part of how we approach everything we do from developing new services and products for our customers, to people decisions and community development. Accountability for diversity and inclusion doesn’t live in one department or team, it belongs to every team member and leader at TELUS.

Executive Leadership

Setting the tone from the top is an important way to demonstrate an organization’s most important values. Our resource groups are mentored and supported by executive sponsors at the national, international and local level.

President and CEO Darren Entwistle champions diversity and inclusion as foundational to the success of our business and our culture.

Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Board

In 2006, TELUS’ Diversity and Inclusion team formally launched our strategy and established a volunteer-based council. Over the years, the council has supported our strategy as a working group, helping to launch our TELUS Resource Groups (TRG) and advance our inclusive culture to where we are today.

In 2021, we transitioned the council to the Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Board whose mandate is to help drive our cultural evolution by integrating strategic diversity and inclusion initiatives across TELUS. The advisory board is made up of TELUS Resource Group chairs and appointed Directors and Vice-Presidents whose business portfolio aligns with our areas of focus. Advisory board members are accountable for elevating our strategy and delivering measurable impact with our diversity and inclusion team.

Employment equity

In Canada, TELUS is governed by the federal Employment Equity Act created to eliminate workplace barriers faced by women, aboriginal people, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.

One of the ways we understand the TELUS team’s diversity is through an employment equity survey. We continue to explore ways to increase the importance of self-identification through our survey for new team members, whose responses ensure that our workforce reflects the communities where we live, work and serve.

Consultation with team member representatives continues to occur through a variety of avenues, including the TELUS Team Member Resource Groups, the Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board and regular meetings of the Joint Employment Equity Committee, which is comprised of equal representation from the company and the union. Throughout the year, company representatives provide committee members with a copy of the most recent Employment Equity Report, review a summary of numerical data, answer questions and provide an overview of initiatives outlined in the Employment Equity Plan. This ensures alignment throughout the organization on our plan goals.

Accessibility at TELUS

Accessibility is an integral part of how the TELUS team develops our products and workplace. And we’re passionate about creating technology that improves accessibility for Canadians. In 2011, we introduced our Accessible Customer Service Policy, and we continue to strive for excellence in accessibility.

Supplier Diversity

Developing opportunities for diverse suppliers

Our Supplier Diversity Program delivers an improved and innovative customer experience by taking proactive steps to provide equal access to suppliers, reflecting the diversity of where we live, work and serve.

The program encourages economic development and provides more opportunities for culturally diverse, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and/or women-run organizations to bid for our business in competitive processes. This ensures that our suppliers reflect our diverse customer base and bring new ideas and creativity to the table.

The scope of this program includes Canadian companies certified by the Canadian Aboriginal and Minority Supplier Council (CAMSC), Women Business Enterprises (WBE) Canada, and the Canadian Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC).

As part of our commitment to a more inclusive future, and to developing longstanding partnerships with suppliers that mirror our core values, we are constantly evolving our Supplier Diversity Program. As a result of these efforts we have increased spend with accredited diverse vendors by 35% since 2014.

Awards and recognition

In 2020, for the eleventh time, TELUS was named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers — an annual competition that recognizes the nation’s leaders in creating diverse and inclusive workplaces.
