FAQs

A hardware and software package to help gain more localized weather information for farms. This solution is designed to capture and interpret weather and specific information from fields every 15 minutes, which is easily accessible through mobile and desktop devices.

The TELUS Agriculture Weather Station measures:

Rain gauge
Air temperature
Air humidity
Leaf wetness
Solar radiation
Wind speed
Wind direction

You can also choose an optional soil sensor that measures:

Soil temperature
Soil moisture
Soil salinity

The TELUS Agriculture Weather Station will help manage risk on farms and plan work activities. It is a tool to help answer questions such as:

Is it too windy to spray today?
Is it going to rain today, should we wait to knock down canola?
Is the ground too cold to seed?
What is the frost risk, is it too early to seed?
Should we drive 30 minutes to hay or wait, what is the leaf wetness?
How much did it rain on land that is 20 km away?

Weather data is also stored in the software and easily retrieved to help farmers manage difficult situations such as insurance claims and crop input product performance complaints.

Weather forecasts and current conditions on apps are sourced from public weather stations that could be hundreds of kilometers from a farm. A weather station can provide more accurate current conditions.

The data from the Weather Station continues to update and improve local forecasts. Weather Stations in the same location for an extended period of time will dramatically improve long-term forecasts.

TELUS Agriculture Weather Station is an introductory offer for the farmer who wants to get started with a weather station and get their feet wet with the software.

TELUS Agriculture Weather Station Premium is a more advanced offer for the farmer who is familiar with weather stations and what they can do for their operation and want to take advantage of additional features in the software such as the disease models, soil temperature, and soil moisture enabled by the soil sensor.

Disease models available with TELUS Agriculture Weather Station Premium are: Canola/Rapeseed - Stem Rot Sclerotinia, Pollen Beetle Flight, Phoma Stem Cancer
Wheat/Barley - FSB, Leaf Blotch, Septoria, Anthracnose, Rust, Aphid Risk, Powdery Mildew, Drechlera, Barley Stripe
Pulses - Botrytis, Sclerotinia, Alternaria, Ascochyta
Soybean - Rust 1 & 2, Sclerotinia
Corn - Leaf Blight, Grey Leaf Spot, FHB
Flax - Sclerotinia, Grey mould, Alternaria, Phoma stem, Septoria, Anthracnose, Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew, Rust, Stemphylum, Leaf Spot
Potatoes - Aphid risk, Phytophthora, Alternaria, Black Leg, Colorado Potato Beetle, Blite

Growers will be required to choose the disease models on the work-order document for the crops that they currently grow. Additional models are available for specialty crops. If your rotation changes, please contact weather@decisivefarming.com.

Once you order a TELUS Agriculture Weather Station, we will place your hardware order. The station can be installed at any point throughout the year but it is easier to install them in the spring. Soil probes should be installed in the spring but removed each winter. This is for improved calibration and to extend the life of the probe. TELUS Agriculture will have a forecasted number of stations in stock, however as the stations are built in Europe we would ask you to give us 8 weeks’ notice prior to when you would like the station installed to allow for shipping time if required, and time to schedule the installer.

TELUS Agriculture Weather Stations will be installed at the end of the field clear of any obstructions that could affect sensor readings for wind, rainfall, etc.

TELUS Agriculture Weather Stations and probes will be installed in the field replicating field soil moisture temperature data to create the most representative data. We have the ability to provide a sample map of the ideal location for it to be installed.

You effectively lease the hardware through your subscription. Should your hardware break down over the term of your subscription and it cannot be fixed, it will be replaced at no cost to you.

Your warranty coverage for the hardware extends to normal wear and tear and device malfunction. If it is damaged by a farm accident you will be billed a prorated amount for the value of the hardware which could be built into a new subscription for a new weather station.

We recommend marking the weather stations well in the field, leaving a buffer where possible, ensuring all operators on the farm know where they are and to take as many preventative measures as possible.

We understand that things happen on a working farm and will work with you through the situation.

Offer only available in Canada. TELUS Agriculture Weather Station plans are subject to TELUS approval and TELUS’ terms and conditions which includes cell coverage availability in your area. TELUS Agriculture Weather Station requires a cell signal to send the data to the software. Speed may vary with your device, internet traffic, environmental conditions, and other factors. TELUS Agriculture reserves the right to alter or modify the plans at any time.
The plan selected by the customer will include the hardware and the software. Installation charges are extra. Annual charges will be made on the anniversary of the first payment. Customers can choose to add-on additional weather stations or soil sensors to best suit their operations. Price may vary as you configure your individual plans.
Customer understands that the hardware is leased. Decisive Farming shall retain full ownership and a security interest in the leased hardware. Leased hardware must be returned in good condition upon cancellation of service, otherwise the replacement cost will be payable by the customer and will be charged to the customer’s account.
Warranty included on the Pessl Eco D3 Station and Sentek TriSCAN® soil sensor (90cm), if included in plan, for the duration of the plan.
