Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) holders, those who deliver localized job training, mentoring, employment assistance and other related programs connected at the National ISET Gathering in Ottawa this past January. The intention of this gathering was to share best practices, meet new people, reconnect with colleagues from coast to coast, and leave the event inspired and full of new ideas to bring back to their communities.
This year, TELUS proudly sponsored the ISET gathering, and team members from across the business connected with ISET holders to discuss careers at TELUS, online safety practices through our TELUS Wise program, solutions to support ISET’s run their business and led a TELUS Health wellness session.

Team members learned many important lessons and made memorable connections that will help them deepen their ability to contribute to Indigenous workforce development on their teams and across the business. A unanimous takeaway from TELUS attendees is that we need to educate ourselves across every corner of the business about how we can really make a difference through our hiring and development practices.
"I think one of the biggest takeaways I had was understanding what ISET holders do and how much work is still needed. The investment into skills training with Indigenous Peoples is a foundational part of our ensuring strong communities and part of the fabric of Canada. At TELUS, we need to focus and dig deep and understand our role in supporting ISET’s," Ashton Singh from TELUS Business shared.
Beatrice Muldoon, TELUS Small Medium Business, commented that many sessions throughout the conference emphasized the “importance of supporting career pathways early, not just at hiring” and explained the value of “long-term partnerships, mentorship and training support.”
Aligning with ISET and the gathering is a key action of our commitment to economic reconciliation. The ISET team is supporting Indigenous Peoples in their career development journeys across the country in culturally responsive and impactful ways, and we are grateful to learn from them and contribute to their mission where we can.
