About APN settings – and how to tell if yours are correct

APN settings

APN (Access Point Name) settings are required to access the internet and to send multimedia picture messages (MMS). Your device reads the APN settings to set up a connection between the network and the internet.

Usually, your device will automatically enable these settings after your SIM is inserted. However, sometimes you will need to input them manually.

Verify your cellular data/APN settings

  1. After inserting your TELUS SIM card for the first time, turn off your device, wait 5 seconds and then turn it back on.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off, then try visiting a website. If it’s not working, input the correct APN settings by following the steps below.

Note: If a data block has been enabled on your account, you will be unable to access the data network (or MMS). See Data blocking for mobile devices.

Change your APN settings

  1. Navigate to the APN settings menu of your device. If you have trouble finding the menu, search for APN Settings in our Device Simulators or consult your device’s user guide.
  2. To add new APN Settings (the wording in your menu may vary slightly):
    • Select Mobile networks , Cellular networks or similar
    • Select Access Point Names
    • Select New APN , the + icon, or Add
  3. Update the form fields with the TELUS APN settings in the table below. This table lists the correct APN settings for our 3G (HSPA) or 4G LTE services. Other fields may be present. They can be left blank and unchanged, and they will not impact your use of the service.

    • Note: Enter the details exactly as listed below. Errors may prevent the service from working.

APN type default, supl, mms Note: Do not leave any spaces when entering default, supl, mms for services used on APN. When an application accesses the network, it provides an APN type when it requests access for data. If default, supl, mms is not an option, choose internet&MMS; option from list.
  1. Save if needed
    • Note: Some devices will save APN settings automatically. Others require you to save by clicking more or menu, or following a prompt. Consult your device user guide if you are having trouble finding the settings
  2. Verify that your settings are working by turning off Wi-Fi and accessing the internet using your cellular network. If it does not work, turn the phone off for few seconds, then turn it back on. Often rebooting the device is necessary for new APN settings to start working.
