Instructions for Indoor, Outdoor and Doorbell cameras

Indoor Camera

To setup your Indoor Camera:

  1. Connect the camera to the Internet, by one of these methods:
    a. Best option: If you have an Ethernet cable, plug in the camera direct to your Internet gateway/router. Once online, you can connect your camera to Wi-Fi from your SmartHome account
    b. Alternate option: If you do not have an Ethernet cable or physical access to your Internet gateway/router, use the Access Point Method described in the video below

  2. Activate or login to your SmartHome account. Choose the appropriate option:
    a. If you are new to TELUS SmartHome (i.e. this camera is your first device), visit telus.com/activatesmarthome and enter your email address to activate your account
    b. If you are already a TELUS SmartHome user, log into your web portal at telus.com/smarthome-security/login

  3. Add your camera to your SmartHome account
    a. Log in to your TELUS SmartHome account on a computer. Select Video > Settings and follow the on-screen instructions to add your camera

Connecting your Indoor Camera using the Ethernet Method

If you cannot physically access the gateway or do not have an Ethernet cable, go to the section Connecting Camera to Wi-Fi with Access Point Method.

  1. Plug into the Ethernet Connector port on the camera and a LAN port on your gateway/router (#3 in the example below)
Note: We just need this Ethernet for the setup steps, after which the camera will connect with Wi-Fi.

  2. Plug in the AC power cable to an electrical outlet and connect to the camera’s power supply port. Do this after connecting the Ethernet cable

  3. Activate or login to your SmartHome account. Choose the appropriate option:

  4. Once logged in, select Video on the left side menu. If this is your system's first video device, select Add Camera

For all subsequent video devices, select Settings > Add Video Device

If your camera shows up automatically, type in a name for your camera and select Update & Install. If the camera does not appear, try Finding Camera with MAC Address. See Troubleshooting section below

  1. After your camera finishes updating, select Set Up Wireless Now. If this is the first camera on your network, select Scan for Networks and choose the Wi-Fi network you would like your camera to connect to. Enter your password, scroll to the bottom of the screen and select Next

Pre-installation checklist

Make sure you have the following items and tools before you begin the installation:

  • Screwdriver
  • Cell phone/TabletMultimeter for testing voltage (optional, but recommended)

Step 1: Check existing doorbell wiring
The Wi-Fi Doorbell Camera must be powered by doorbell wiring. It is not compatible with a remote doorbell chime.

Wired doorbell (compatible):

  • Doorbell button is connected to the wall by wires
  • Chime is powered by wires coming from the wall

Remote doorbell (not compatible):

  • Uses batteries
  • Chime plugged into an electrical outlet

Step 2: Test existing doorbell
Make sure the existing doorbell works by pushing the button to sound the chime. If it is a wired doorbell and is not working, electrical work may be required. It is recommended to have a working chime box before installing the doorbell camera.

Step 3: Identify chime type
Identify whether the chime is mechanical (ding-dong) or digital (plays a melody). Both types are compatible, but the installation will be different depending on the type of chime. You can identify the type by looking inside the chime box. For more help, watch this video.

Chime TypeCharacteristicRequirement
MechanicalMetal bar and striker pin. Makes a Ding-Dong sound when the doorbell is pressed. No modification needed.
DigitalSpeaker. Plays a melody when the doorbell is pressed.Need to add a digital adapter.
No chime boxNone. You MUST use a 10 ohm / 10 watt power resistor if there is no chime box.

If the chime has a metal bar and a striker pin, then it is mechanical. No modification is necessary. However, if the chime has a speaker, then it is a digital chime and needs a digital adapter. If there is no chime box and the doorbell wiring is directly connected to the transformer, you will need to use a 10 ohm/10 watt power resistor to prevent damage to the doorbell camera.

The recommended distance between the Wi-Fi router and the Wi-Fi Doorbell Camera should be no more than 20 feet.

Physical installation

Before beginning, turn off the breaker that controls your doorbell circuit.

Step 1:
Remove existing doorbell. Disconnect the wires from the two terminals attached to the doorbell. Take care to prevent wires from slipping into the wall.

Note: Be careful when handling the wires in cold weather as they can be very fragile and easily damaged.

Step 2:
Mount the bracket. Pull the two wires through the bracket hole and secure it to the mounting location.

Step 3:
Connect doorbell power to the bracket. Locate the two contact screws on the mounting plate and insert one wire under each screw and tighten. Avoid shorting the wires. Tuck any excess wire back into the wall.

Important: If your existing doorbell has no chime box and is directly connected to the transformer, you will need additional 10ohm/10W resistor between the wire and the doorbell.

Note: Polarity does NOT matter. Slightly lift contacts on the back of the camera to make a more sturdy connection to prevent charging issues.

Step 4:
Attach doorbell camera to the mounting bracket. Start with the top notch first and then snap the rest in place.

Step 5:
Tighten the provided screw at the bottom of the doorbell camera to secure into place. Be careful not to strip the threads of the screw when fastening.

Step 6:
The camera will begin to power up. The LED will alternate between red and blue to indicate it is charging. Once it is fully charged, it will alternate between green and red. At this point, you can sync the device.

Step 7:
If you have a mechanical chime, your doorbell is ready to use. Move on to the steps below.

If you have a digital chime, follow the steps to connect the digital adaptor to your chime and then proceed to the steps below.

Connecting Doorbell Camera to SmartHome Security system

Important: If this is your first time logging into your TELUS SmartHome account, first go to telus.com/activatesmarthome to activate your account and receive your TELUS SmartHome activation email.

The following steps should be completed on a mobile device (phone or tablet) using the TELUS SmartHome App.

Step 1:
Launch TELUS Smart Home app on a phone or tablet and log in.

Step 2:
Select Doorbell Camera from the menu bar in the top left corner of the app.

Note: If it does not appear for you, contact TELUS SUPPORT to check that the correct service plan is enabled. If it was recently enabled, refresh your session by logging out and logging back in to the mobile app.

Step 3:
Select Add Doorbell Camera or the + icon.

Step 4:
Follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 5:
Connect to the doorbell’s temporary Wi-Fi access point (Skybell HD Network) to configure the camera. The process differs for iOS and Android. Follow the correct procedure for your device.

iOS: Go to Settings, then select Wi-Fi and choose the network Skybell HD followed by the serial number.

Android: The TELUS SmartHome app will detect the doorbell camera’s network automatically.

Step 6:
Select the home’s Wi-Fi network and carefully enter the password. Select Join.

Step 7:
The doorbell camera will start to install. The LED will double-flash orange, then alternate between blue and green for 30 seconds and finally arrive at a solid green. If the LED gets stuck on the double-flash orange mode, then it is likely the Wi-Fi password was entered incorrectly. Re-enter the correct Wi-Fi password. Select Done once you have received confirmation that the installation is complete.

That’s it! Your doorbell is ready to use and the video feed should show up in your SmartHome App.
