Do you have a smart device on your holiday shopping list this year? With everything from smart thermostats and washing machines to smart toasters and watches… IoT (Internet of Things) is everywhere. According to experts, an average home will have around 10 IoT connected devices - even a smart litter box! These gadgets are connected to the internet and collect data (in this case, how many times your cats use the box) and are able to communicate with other devices (like receiving a notification on your smartphone that it’s time to change the waste bin).

With more than 30 billion devices in use today, and that number growing exponentially each year, it’s important to be aware of the risks of connecting every aspect of our lives to the internet. Yes, IoT devices save time - but while bad actors may not be interested in your cat’s hygiene habits - their security vulnerabilities could allow them to:

  • Gain access to your Wi-Fi network
  • Spy on you using the devices’ camera and/or microphone
  • Install malware on the devices that allows them to access your personal information
  • Launch cyberattacks against other systems

Dos and don’ts: Choosing IoT devices

No device will ever be 100% safe, but if you shop smart and follow some simple steps, you can make your gadgets as secure as possible.

Do:

  • Research before you buy and look for devices from established and reputable companies
  • Use strong passwords, two-factor authentication and follow these tips to ensure your security
  • Consider using a VPN or guest network for connected devices and keep your Wi-Fi and router secure
  • Review privacy and permission settings so you know what information is being accessed
  • Install updates regularly and read the manual: some devices install updates automatically, and some don’t. Regular updates will help you stay on top of the latest security patches

Don’t:

  • Leave devices on when you’re not using them. You can also disable features you don’t need
  • Connect security-related devices like smart locks to your smart speaker. You don’t want a potential burglar to access your home by yelling: “Hey Alexa, open the front door!”
  • Accept default settings without understanding what information you’re sharing. You may not need that device to connect to the internet after all
  • Accidentally record sensitive information. Working from home near a smart device? Remember to hit the mute button and switch off the microphone to prevent accidental recordings of private conversations or confidential information
