How to make a collect call and rates

What is a collect call?

With a collect call, the call is billed to the person receiving the call versus the person making the call.

Collect calls are subject to two types of fees:

  • Transaction fees

  • Long-distance fees

Transaction fees (per call):

  • Automated collect calls:
    $1.50
    (see below)

  • Operator-assisted collect calls:
    $1.00 to $2.50
    (see below)

  • Other collect calls:
    $1.00 to $4.25
    (see below)

  • Other fees:
    $1.00
    (see below)
    Note:
Other collect calls made through TELUS with operator assistance or which are not covered by a TELUS long distance plan are billed at the base rate for long-distance calls without any discount. Transaction fees may apply for operator-assisted calls. See below.

Long-distance fees:

  • From Quebec:
    $0.75
per minute at any time of day within Canada or the United States.

Transaction fees

Automated call: The customer makes a collect call using an automated interactive voice response (IVR) system

  • Collect calls billed to the called number: $1.50 The customer makes a call using an automated system by dialling 0 followed by the 10-digit phone number. The customer selects the collect call option. The automated system records the customer’s name, confirms the charge, makes the call and then bills the number called.

  • Calls billed to a third-party (outside) phone number: $1.50 The customer makes a call using an automated system by dialling 0 followed by the 10-digit phone number. The customer requests that the call be billed to an outside phone number. The automated system records the customer’s name, confirms the charge, makes the call and then bills the outside number.

Operator-assisted calls: The customer makes a collect call and is assisted by an operator

  • Collect calls billed to the called number: $2.50 The customer dials 0 then waits for the operator’s assistance to place the call. The operator takes the customer’s name and the phone number, confirms the charge, connects the call and then bills the number called.

  • Call billed to a third-party (outside) phone number: $2.50 The customer dials 0 then waits for the operator’s assistance to place the call. The operator takes the customer’s name and the phone number, confirms the charge, connects the call and then bills the outside number.

Other call types

  • Operator-assisted call: $2.00 Operator-assisted calls are calls connected by an operator.

  • Person-to-person call: $4.25 The customer dials 0 then waits for the operator’s assistance to place the call. There are two types of person-to-person calls:
    Paid by the caller
: The caller is billed and asks to speak to a specific person at the called number.
    Collect
: The caller asks to speak to a specific person at the called number and the called party is billed.

Other fees

  • Customers ask the operator to call them back after the collect call is completed and inform them of the length of the call (in minutes) and the charge for the call. A request for the time and charges of the call can be billed to the caller (sent paid), billed collect for collect calls or billed to the outside number for calls billed to a third party. Some operator fees may also apply in addition to the fees for the call itself. $1.00
