Empowering the future: our partnership with Solas Energy

Apr 11, 2024

At TELUS, sustainability is embedded in our core business strategy. Our team is dedicated to protecting the planet our children will inherit, demonstrated by our extensive track record of meeting, or exceeding, ambitious environmental targets. As we grow as a company, expand our network and integrate 5G technology, our demand for energy will increase. Investments in renewable energy support our sustainable business growth, efficiently powering our network through cleaner energy sources. We are working toward a low carbon future by enabling new solar and wind power facilities, generating Renewable Energy Certificates and adding clean energy to the electricity grid. As we reflect on our journey, our partners at Solas Energy have played an important role in our success.

Solas Energy is a leading provider of comprehensive consulting services to support the energy transition throughout Canada and the US. The company supports its partners in achieving their sustainability goals through strategically advising them on development and construction of wind, solar and energy storage infrastructure, and consulting on technologies including hydrogen, biomass and zero-emission vehicles. To date, Solas Energy has supported over 100 GW of renewable energy projects throughout Canada and the US – the equivalent of the amount of energy needed to power around 16 million average Canadian homes.

A rare women-owned company in the renewable energy industry, Solas Energy is led by co-founders and professional engineers Paula McGarrigle in Calgary, Alberta, and Evelyn Carpenter in Fort Collins, Colorado, USA. Founded in 2009, Solas Energy has grown to support the development and construction of some of the world’s largest renewable energy projects and advises businesses, communities, First Nations and governments on navigating environmental impacts and the complexities of climate change policy. The company’s core values of integrity, sustainability, and diversity, equity and inclusion are evident throughout its Environmental, Social, and Governance Report.

The relationship between TELUS and Solas Energy spans eight years, starting in 2016 with providing advisory services on TELUS’ first virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with the first utility-scale solar facility in Alberta. Now, TELUS has executed four vPPAs with wind and solar facilities that have the potential to generate 167 MW of renewable energy. Over the years, our partnership has transformed into an engaging and collaborative dynamic built on trust. Our compatibility, shared values and commitment to sustainability underscore the strength of our collaboration, positioning us as dedicated partners in the pursuit of strategic investments that lead to a more sustainable future.
