Diversity and Inclusiveness at TELUS

Our vision is to foster an inclusive culture that embraces diversity and sparks innovation for our customers. Leveraging different perspectives, experiences and ways of thinking allows us to deliver better insights, decisions, and solutions.

Recognizing the power of diversity and inclusiveness

At TELUS we believe that a dedication to diversity and inclusiveness − in terms of ability, experience, gender, sexual orientation, race and culture – is paramount to creating an organisation that mirrors the true makeup of our society, our markets and our customers. It also enables us to better understand and support the needs of our clients, and deliver on our top priority to consistently put our customers first in everything we do.

Diversity and Inclusiveness Office

Established in 2008, the Diversity and Inclusiveness Office oversees initiatives that promote diversity and inclusiveness across TELUS. With strong executive leadership support from Sandy McIntosh, Executive Vice-president, People & Culture and the Chief Human Resources Officer, it integrates an element of diversity and inclusiveness into everything we do.

Diversity and Inclusiveness Council
Since it was established in 2008, women and men from diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives have served on our Diversity and Inclusiveness Council. Playing a key role in our diversity and inclusiveness strategy, the Council brings awareness to the value of diversity while supporting initiatives such as the creation and growth of team member resource groups.

Awards and Recognition

In early 2014, for the sixth straight year, TELUS was named one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers — an annual competition that recognizes the nation’s leaders in creating diverse and inclusive workplaces.

TELUS is one of 54 companies and organizations in Canada that have developed exceptional diversity initiatives to promote inclusiveness among employee groups, such as women, members of visible minorities and persons with varied abilities.

In 2011, 2012 and 2013, TELUS was also named one of the Best Employers for New Canadians in an annual competition that recognizes the nation’s leaders in assisting recent immigrants make the transition to a new workplace – and a new life in Canada.

Here’s what our team members are saying about diversity and inclusiveness:

Employment Equity

In Canada, TELUS is governed by the federal Employment Equity Act created to eliminate workplace barriers faced by women, aboriginal people, persons with disabilities and members of visible minorities.

One of the ways we understand the TELUS team’s diversity is through an employment equity survey. We continue to explore ways to increase the importance of self-identification through our survey for new team members, whose responses ensure that our workforce reflects the communities where we live, work and serve.

Consultation with team member representatives continues to occur through a variety of avenues, including the TELUS Resource Groups, the Diversity and Inclusiveness Council and regular meetings of the Joint Employment Equity Committee, which is comprised of equal representation from the company and the union. Throughout the year, company representatives provide committee members with a copy of the most recent Employment Equity Report, review a summary of numerical data, answer questions and provide an overview of initiatives outlined in the Employment Equity Plan. This ensures alignment throughout the organization on our plan goals.
