Wyatt Smith, BSc, MSc, PhD
Dr. Wyatt Smith is a production consultant specializing in feedlot operations, ruminant nutrition, beef sustainability, statistics, applied research, economic modeling, and beef cattle energetics. He earned his Associate of Science (A.Sc.) in Animal Science from Connors State Community College, followed by a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Animal Science from South Dakota State University. Dr. Smith further advanced his expertise by obtaining a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Animal Science from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. in Animal Science from West Texas A&M University.
In September 2022, Dr. Smith joined TELUS Agriculture, formerly Feedlot Health Management Services, as a Feedlot Nutritional and Production Consultant. His role involves leveraging his extensive knowledge and experience to optimize feedlot operations and improve production outcomes. Dr. Smith's work is characterized by a strong emphasis on applied research and the use of statistical and economic modeling to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of beef cattle production. He also leads various sustainability efforts for clients enrolled in offset projects under the TIER system as well as other carbon offset and inset ventures in North America.
Dr. Smith is blessed to have the opportunity to work with feedlots both domestically and internationally, providing a wide range of situations to learn and grow from. As one of the younger consultants, he has had the opportunity to be mentored by several team members, which has provided him with the rare opportunity of learning from multiple consultants—something many young consultants outside our organization do not have the opportunity to do.
Throughout his Ph.D. program, Dr. Smith had the opportunity to gather data from several of the major packing plants almost on a weekly basis. This experience has proved very beneficial for helping our clients when faced with common beef packing plant questions.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has made significant contributions to the field of animal science, particularly in the areas of ruminant nutrition and beef sustainability. His expertise in beef cattle energetics and economic modeling has been instrumental in advancing industry practices and improving the overall health and productivity of livestock. Dr. Smith continues to be a valuable asset to TELUS Agriculture and the broader animal science community.
