What is spam?
Most of the time, email is an excellent way to communicate with friends and family. On occasion you might receive unsolicited or irrelevant emails for the purpose of advertising, trying to obtain personal data or spreading viruses. This is considered spam.
Tips on identifying spam email
Here are some suggestions for identifying spam:
- Be suspicious of the email received from people or organizations that you don’t know. If you have not interacted with them, it is unlikely anything they send to you will be legitimate
- Don’t always trust emails with a URL, especially if there are shorteners embedded which makes it hard to tell where it really goes
- Be suspicious of unopened attachments included in messages from business organizations
- Never give information that is being requested by email, such as login credentials. If you’d like to follow-up for more information, go directly to the company’s website and contact them through there
- Verify the email domain to ensure that it matches the company that the email claims to be sent from

- Regularly check your junk mail folder so that you can retrieve any email messages that are valid. Right-click to mark it as “not spam” to improve the filtering going forward
- Unsubscribe from unwanted email distribution lists
Mark emails as spam
You can mark or unmark emails as spam. Google also automatically identifies spam and other suspicious emails and sends them to "Spam."
As you report more spam, Gmail is better able to automatically mark similar messages as spam.
- On your computer, openGmail
- Select one or more emails
- Select theReport spamicon as shown below

: When you click the "report spam" icon or manually move an email into your Spam folder, Google will receive a copy of the email and may analyze it to help protect our users from spam and abuse.Unmark an email as spam
You can remove an email from Spam if you incorrectly marked it as spam:
- On your computer, openGmail
- On the left, selectMore
- SelectSpam
- Open the email
- At the top, selectNot spam
Tip
: To stop a message from being sent to Spam in the future, you can:Delete emails in spam
- On your computer, openGmail
- On the left, selectMore
- SelectSpam
- At the top, selectDelete all spam messages nowor select specific emails, then clickDelete forever
