Travelling with your mobile device

Important information to help before you travel, while you travel, and after you travel

Here is an overview of what you need to know when traveling with your mobile device outside of Canada.

Before you travel

Depending on what country you are visiting, the travel products TELUS offers can vary. For more information regarding the travel options specific to the country you’re traveling to, visit telus.com/travel.

The three main travel options offered to TELUS customers while traveling outside of canada are: Easy Roam, travel passes and pay-per-use.

  1. Easy Roam: for $7 a day in the US and $10 a day internationally, use your Canadian rate plan when you travel
  2. Travel Passes: get data, voice and text separate from your existing Canadian plan while roaming
  3. Pay-Per-Use: if you do not have Easy Roam or purchase a travel pass, pay-per-use rates will apply

If you are traveling on a cruise ship, your options to use your phone are different than what is explained above. Please visit Cruise ships and mobile device roaming for more information.

Using your device outside of Canada is only available to monthly subscription customers. If you are on a pre-paid plan and are interested in roaming, please visit our rate plan page for more information on our different options.

Once you have chosen what product you would like to use while traveling, there are a few more steps to ensure your phone is setup to travel.

  1. Text the word SAVE to 7626 to see your travel settings and ensure your phone is set up
  2. Turn on data roaming: Data roaming is typically switched OFF by default. To enable data roaming on your device, follow the device-specific instructions below

iOS (Apple) devices

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select Cellular from the settings menu
  3. Toggle Data Roaming ON. It will appear green when data roaming is enabled

Android devices

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select More Settings or More Networks
  3. Select Mobile Networks
  4. Add a checkmark to data roaming

BlackBerry 10 devices

  1. Select Settings
  2. Select Network Connections
  3. Select Mobile Networks

While you travel

When you arrive in another country and turn your phone on, you will receive a welcome message. This message includes pay-per-use rates, how-to-dial instructions, and information on what travel product you have.

For instant help with using your phone while traveling, simply text HELP to 7626.

Worried about your usage while roaming? My Account is a great tool to view usage and make any changes to your account. Remember turning on data roaming? This is another tool to help manage your usage while roaming - if you toggle this off, and refrain from answering any calls or texts, you will not be charged for roaming. After you travel

Once you return back to Canada, you may be wondering what exactly will show up on your bill. For more information on what to expect on your bill and how charges are calculated, visit Roaming charges on your bill

If you were traveling with Easy Roam, you don't need to remove this feature from your account. You will only be charged when you use the feature while roaming, so keep it on your account for your next trip!

One last thing, make sure you turn data roaming back off in case you go close to the US border. Follow instructions above on how to manage this control.
