Supporting a Child Advocacy Centre in Kelowna
There are 26 Child Advocacy Centres (CAC) across Canada, focused on helping children who have experienced trauma and advocating on their behalf to provide them with the best support possible. In partnership with the RCMP, Ministry of Children Family Development, the Interior Health Authority and the Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society, the CAC is redesigning the way that they address child abuse by putting children at the centre of the conversation. With one third of children reporting abuse in some way, supporting them requires continuous effort and resources, especially during these unprecedented times. Through the support of the community and one of our grants, the Child Advocacy Centre of Kelowna (CAC) recently opened a 14,000 square foot facility, allowing for greater support for local children in need.
With this new centre, CAC Kelowna is able to support ongoing program delivery throughout the greater Okanagan region and help at-risk children avoid continued cycles of abuse. Due to COVID-19, they are anticipating a surge in cases, and it is through one of our grants that they are able to continue putting children first.
“The work that we are embarking on at the Child Advocacy Centre is so important to building a strong and healthy future for our community. Without the support of the community, we could not do this work. The TELUS Friendly Future Foundation has become an important partner, enabling us to deliver critical programming to children impacted by abuse.
"We are incredibly grateful for their support," says Dr. Rick Oliver, Kelowna CAC Board Chair.
Through our continued partnership with CAC, we can protect and support more children and youth in our communities and help them create stronger, healthier futures.
