Smart Home Security Pet and Fire Safety Tips

When the worst happens and fires strike our homes, it’s not a good situation for anybody. And our furry friends are just as much at risk as we are when it comes to fire. Like us they can be affected by smoke inhalation and serious or fatal injury. But with a little preparation, you can protect your pets, keep your whole pack safe and have peace of mind even when you’re not at home.

Tip 1: Start with the basics, always use collars

If you ever need to leave in the case of an emergency or a real fire, you’ll want to keep your pet gear ready for a safe exit. Having leashes and collars at hand will help you guide your pets to safety during an evacuation - even if it’s a drill. Glow-in-the-dark safety collars also help ensure your four legged companions are visible to first responders. And it goes without saying, ensuring your pets are microchipped and have clear identification on their collar is a must.

Tip 2: Pet-proof your home

Pet-proofing your home is another great way to keep your pets safe. Just like children, our fur babies can actually cause fires accidentally with their insatiable curiosity. Two easy ways to pet proof your home include not leaving open flames unattended and securing the fireplace. Also, make sure to secure any loose electrical cords or wiring so they don’t mistake them as chew toys, use knob covers when the stove is not in use, and never leave candles unattended.

When you’re away from your home for the day or evening, it’s best to keep your pets near doors or windows. This makes it easier for first responders to see them and get to them.

Tip 3: Have a fire evacuation plan in place that includes your pets

Most pets aren’t thrilled by the sound of fire alarms, but you can help them stay calm in the case of an emergency by helping them get used to the sound. Start with playing a recording of an alarm at low volume and increase it as you train them what to do when they hear it. That includes practicing your escape routes, and where to meet up.
