The Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA) will assign blocks of new numbers to telecommunications carriers only when all numbers in the existing area codes have run out. This could be long after the May 14, 2022 new area code launch date, and will vary by area and telecommunications provider.
Numbers with new area code 742 will only become available for reservation to customers after such numbers have been assigned to a telecommunications provider.
These measures are the result of decisions by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Local telecommunications providers are responsible for implementing the changes.
The overlay method simply involves adding a new area code to the geographic region served by existing area codes. The multiple area codes will co-exist, providing for a substantial increase in available telephone numbers in the region without affecting existing 10 digits numbers. With the overlay method, calls to telephone numbers with a 742 area code will be either local or long distance calling. It is important to configure equipment properly to ensure calls will be completed.
Yes. Most regions in Canada require multiple area codes to accommodate demand for telephone numbers. Just as Southern Ontario has three area codes today, adding a fourth area code will provide a substantial increase in available telephone numbers.
