TMS and esketamine
Emerging treatments for depression, OCD and smoking cessation
Our Vancouver Nelson Care Centre is pleased to offer TMS and esketamine, two alternative treatments for treatment resistant depression.
TMS is now available at our downtown Montreal clinic for depression, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and smoking cessation.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an outpatient, drug free treatment intended for patients who are suffering with depression but not responding to medication or unable to tolerate antidepressant medication. TMS can also be used for treating OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and for smoking cessation.
How does TMS work?
A Health Canada approved non-invasive therapy, TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. With repeated treatments over the course of approximately 6 weeks, the pulses can help strengthen mood stability.
Is TMS right for me?
If you or a loved one is struggling with major depression, we recommend discussing TMS treatments with your family doctor or a mental health professional.
TMS can also be a potential option for treating OCD and for smoking cessation.

Approximately 50% to 55% of patients with treatment resistant depression experience a response to TMS treatment.

Esketamine is offered to patients experiencing moderate to severe depression symptoms. It may also be an option for someone who has not responded to two or more separate courses of treatment during the current depressive episode they are experiencing.
Administered as a nasal spray, it is absorbed more quickly than oral medication. Results can be noticed in hours or days instead of weeks or months.
How does esketamine work?
Esketamine belongs to a group of medicines that work on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. It works by changing the activity of certain natural substances in the brain. A nasal spray that is used together with an antidepressant taken by mouth, it can take the form of either:
A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)
A serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI)
