Charlton Berry, Engineer-in-Training
I’m on our Outside Plant Engineering team – we deliver advanced communication technologies for new residential and commercial buildings. A typical day involves meeting with customers to gauge sites, identifying solutions, and creating designs to implement those solutions. I’ve had the opportunity to work with next generation technologies like gigabit passive optical networks (GPON), and collaborate with various city engineering departments along with BC Hydro, which has been valuable experience towards my goal of working on building telecommunication networks. As part of the GTLP, I also represent TELUS at hackathons and career fairs, and lead our recruitment efforts.
The GTLP has helped me narrow down what I want to do with my career, while helping me develop my skills as an engineer through training and certification programs.
Huzaifa Galely, Software Developer
I joined the GTLP in 2016, and after two years trying out various streams, I landed an operations role on our Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Orchestration team. Virtualization is the future of broadband networks and I am excited to be working on cutting edge technologies. One of the coolest projects I worked on was the transformation of a monolithic database service to a micro-services architecture driven by asynchronous Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). I also built part of the automated deployment toolchain to create a production-ready service within minutes as opposed to hours.
TELUS is truly a place where you can collaborate with people who are as interested in the future of technology as you are.
Vishakha Ghosh, Security Consultant
I found out about the GTLP while working at TELUS as a co-op student. I was excited about the incredible learning opportunities the program offers and wanted to experience it firsthand. During my first rotation, I discovered a passion for cybersecurity while working on an Internet of Things (IoT) project involving Identity and Privacy in the Connected Home, which made me aspire for a career path in cybersecurity. I went on to complete further rotations in the security realm and secured a full-time role on our Security DevOps team.
I am currently working on our Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) Platform team where I support system enhancements and operations for a customer-facing platform. Additionally, I’m working on supporting Ansible automation to simplify the complexity of work our security consultants lead for TELUS’ customers. The GTLP experience has been hugely rewarding for me – both in helping me identify and explore my passion, as well as in giving me exposure and experience across multiple teams and departments.
