TELUS announces $100,000 in funding to help Barrie youth reach their full potential

TELUS launches 13th community board in Canada in support of local youth and families.

Barrie, Ontario – Today, TELUS officially launched the TELUS Barrie Community Board, led by Board Chair Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes, President and CEO of Georgian College. The TELUS Barrie Community Board will give out $100,000 each year in grants to local charitable organizations to support youth programs. This important contribution is in addition to TELUS’ history of giving in Barrie including support of the TELUS Motorcycle Ride for Dad, Habitat for Humanity Huronia and the Barrie Colts among others.

The TELUS Barrie Community Board is comprised of distinguished Barrie community leaders including:

  • Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes, Chair of the Board, President and CEO, Georgian College

  • Philip Schultz, Vice-Chair, Vice President, Strategy and Development, TELUS

  • Chief Kimberley Greenwood, Barrie Police Service

  • Tony Marquis, Senior Vice President Operations Eastern Region, CP Rail

  • Jason McCoy, Canadian Country music singer/songwriter

  • Mark Saunders, CEO, Barrie Public Library

  • Lisa Richardson, Vice President, Customer Experience, TELUS

  • Kim Vey, Director of Client Care, TELUS

“TELUS has a longstanding history of making a positive and lasting social impact in the communities where our team members live, work and serve,” said Jill Schnarr, Vice President Community Investment and Corporate Marketing, TELUS. “Our community boards help us build stronger and healthier communities by putting funding decisions in the hands of local leaders who understand where our contributions will create the most meaningful outcome. We look forward to working alongside these local leaders to make a positive and sustainable difference in the lives of youth and families in Barrie and across Simcoe County for many years to come.”

Organizations seeking funding from the TELUS Barrie Community Board must be a registered Canadian charity and put forward a project that demonstrates a focus on enabling youth from Simcoe County to succeed. The Board will review applications three times a year and select those that they feel will have the most impact for youth in the community.

Collectively, TELUS’ 18 Community Boards around the world have contributed more than $65 million in support of almost 5,000 local charitable projects, enriching the lives of more than two million children and youth through technology and education each year.

“I am grateful to be a part of this important community initiative that will help youth and families right here in Barrie and Simcoe Country,” said Dr. MaryLynn West-Moynes, Chair of the TELUS Barrie Community Board. “Through their own community efforts, each board member has proven their commitment to the community by helping to make significant and tangible differences over the years. I know we will make a positive social impact on families and youth in Simcoe County by working together as a team, and on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank TELUS for their very meaningful commitment to Barrie and Simcoe County.”

TELUS and its team have been part of the community since it launched national wireless services in 2000. Earlier this year, TELUS reaffirmed its commitment to Barrie and Simcoe County residents by announcing that the company will invest $1.5 billion in new communications infrastructure and technology across Ontario through 2020, including $250 million this year alone.

These investments will further enhance the speed, capacity and coverage of Canada’s largest and fastest network in each corner of the province, and in Barrie and Simcoe County, connecting more businesses directly to TELUS’ gigabit-enabled fibre network, and enhance TELUS’ innovative healthcare solutions for Ontario healthcare providers and citizens.
