Supporting disaster relief in Fort McMurray
Keeping our Communities Connected
On May 3, massive wildfires triggered the largest fire-related evacuation in Alberta history with tens of thousands of people forced to leave their homes in more than 12 communities, including Fort McMurray. Urgent emergency services are required to support individuals and families.
We know that helping communities recover from the effects of wildfires is not easy, but with your support, we can help those affected by this disaster. TELUS is supporting the Red Cross and its efforts to help those displaced by the fires through a special text-to-donate program which enables Canadians and our customers to help the relief efforts in Fort Mac.
We will be matching employee and customer donations up to $50,000 and the TELUS Edmonton Community Board has generously donated an additional $50,000 to local Fort McMurray charities in support of emergency relief efforts.
One thousand comfort kits have been sent to provide some of the displaced residents with the necessities they may have left behind. In addition, one thousand cell phones with text and data service have been sent to first responders and residents assembling at the many evacuation sites across the community.
We have also sent wireless charging stations to the evacuation centres. Six cellular on wheels stations have either arrived or on route to the area, which will allow for continued cellular coverage.
Our collective thoughts are with all those who have been affected, and we send our heartfelt thanks to all emergency workers, our TELUS team and our customers.
