From Customer Service to Customer Engagement: Are Utilities Prepared for the Smart Grid Experience?
IDC Energy Insights sponsored by TELUS
February 2010
Overview:
Forces in the new energy economy are coming together to drive utilities to adopt new ways of serving their customers. Utilities, regulators, shareholders, credit rating agencies, and customers are examining strategies such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and demand response. At the same time, retail providers are providing new product offerings. New technology, such as smart metering, energy management applications and smart appliances, is changing the way utilities will be interacting with their customers. But are utilities ready for these changes and the implications for customer engagement?
This White Paper reviews the changes in customer relationships, business processes, and systems that utilities will experience with the introduction of smart metering and other new initiatives. Findings are based on primary research conducted with business and IT personnel at 60 large utilities in North America.

Smart Metering – Brighter Ideas for Energy Conservation
New metering technology is one of the first steps towards a more intelligent power grid. This “smarter” grid encourages greater energy conservation by giving consumers the ability to better monitor and manage their electricity use. When combined with near real-time and/or time-of-use (TOU) billing programs (e.g. higher power prices during peak periods), consumers have both the awareness and the tools to dramatically decrease their overall power costs. For power utilities, the smarter grid is an environmentally friendly solution that has many large-scale benefits: reduced peak demand, avoided facility construction costs, recovered costs (e.g. theft), improved system reliability, and new sources of revenue.
TELUS sees itself as a key enabler of this vision. Given TELUS’ network capabilities and our home area network vision, we are the strategic partner of choice to overcome obstacles and deploy ground-breaking smart meter infrastructure projects and customer engagement strategies.
