Using Teletypewriter (TTY) payphones

There are two types of TTY equipped payphones located throughout Alberta and BC. One utilizes the keypad and display on the payphone and one utilizes a motorized drawer attached below or next to the payphone.


To call a TELUS Relay agent using a keypad TTY:

  1. Remove the handset from the holder.
  2. Dial 711 for the TELUS Relay agent.
  3. The display on the phone will prompt you to dial the Number you wish to reach.
  4. Wait until the TELUS Relay agent response comes on the display.
  5. Use the payphone keypad to communicate with the TELUS Relay agent (the operator may ask for destination number again).
  6. After your conversation, hang up the handset.

To call directly to another TTY phone:

  1. Remove the handset from the holder.
  2. Dial *** and the number you wish to call.
  3. For a local call, deposit payment, pay by coin, TELUS calling card or credit card.
  4. Wait until the display indicated the call has been connected then dial *** to begin communication using the keypad.
  5. After your conversation, hang up the handset.

To make an operator assisted call to another TTY phone:

  1. Remove the handset from the holder.
  2. Dial 1-800-855-1155.
  3. Watch the display to prompt you to enter the destination number to call.
  4. Wait until the TELUS Relay agent response comes on the display.
  5. Use the payphone keypad to communicate with the TELUS Relay agent (the operator may ask for destination number again).
  6. After your conversation, hang up the handset.

Helpful hints

  • Press * to switch between entry modes:
    1. for predictive text.
    2. for numeric entry.
    3. for multi-tap.
  • Press 0 to cycle to next word in predictive text mode.
  • Press # to for space or to send.
  • Press ♦ for backspace (up to last space character).
  • Note: Remember to type GA when finished typing.

Note: For 911 calls, please dial 711 to be connected to the TELUS Relay agent, who will then direct your call to the appropriate emergency service in your area.


Using a Motorized Drawer TTY


To call the TELUS Relay Service operator:

  1. Remove the handset from the holder.
  2. Dial 711 for the TELUS Relay agent. The TTY keyboard will open when 711 is dialled.
  3. Watch the signal light on the TTY drawer, which indicates ringing.
  4. After your conversation, hang up the handset. The TTY keyboard will close automatically.

To call directly to another TTY phone:

  1. Remove the handset from the holder. For a local call, deposit payment.
  2. Dial the number. Watch the signal light on the TTY drawer to see ringing or busy.
  3. When the other TTY answers, your TTY keyboard will open.
  4. When you hang up the handset, the TTY keyboard will close.

Helpful hints

  • To use the TTY Voice Announcer, press ***. The announcer will say, 'TTY call, please use text telephone'.
  • If the display says 'drawer closing' before you are done, press any key to keep it open.
  • To place a long distance call charged collect, third number or to a calling card, dial the TELUS Relay Service agent at 711.

Note: For 911 calls, please dial 711 to be connected to the TELUS Relay agent, who will then direct your call to the appropriate emergency service in your area.
