Parental Control FAQ

Why do I need to set up Parental Controls?

Not all shows are meant for all eyes. With Parental Controls you can control what your family or guests can watch.

What can I control?

There are five different ways to block content with the Parental Controls feature.

  1. Channels
  2. Movie Ratings
  3. Canadian TV classifications
  4. Unrated content
  5. Adult programs

Blocking multiple items is recommended.

Why should I set up multiple blocking items?

If you are going to block content from displaying, it is recommended that you lock multiple items to ensure that you take care of both TV shows and movies.

For example, if you have young children at home you may want to block the following:

  • Movie Ratings: 14+
  • Canadian TV classifications 14+
  • Unrated: lock
  • Adult: lock

Can I block Adult program titles, images and content from showing up in the guide?

Yes, but from the Parental Controls menu you must scroll down to the fifth option, Adult programs, and select Lock adult programs.

Selecting A in the Movie Ratings and 18+ in the Canadian TV classifications is not enough. These two options will not prevent Adult titles and images from appearing on the menu.

How do I set up Parental Controls?

To set up your Parental Controls:

  • Press Menu on your Optik remote
  • Select Settings
  • Select Parental Controls and press OK
  • Enter a 4 digit PIN using your remote
  • Confirm the 4 digit PIN by re-entering the PIN
  • Select the content you would like to lock. For example, to prevent Adult program titles, images and content from showing in your Optik TV menu, scroll down and select the fifth option, Adult programs
  • Repeat the above steps on every set top box in your household that you wish to have parental controls

If I set up Parental Controls on one digital box, will all my other digital boxes be configured as well?

No, Parental Controls must be configured individually on each digital box. You can have different settings on each box.

How can I watch a blocked program?

Tune in to the blocked channel or titles and press OK. Enter your PIN. Select “Unlock this program” and press OK. The program will automatically relock after 4 hours.

What is the difference between a Parental Locking PIN and a Rental locking PIN?

Parental Controls are used to block select content that you already subscribe to from being seen. The Parental Locking PIN allows you to set up Parental Controls and block/unblock content.

A Rental Locking PIN is used to block users from ordering content not already included in your monthly subscription. For example, if you want to block family members or guests from ordering Pay Per View events or On Demand movies, you should set up a Rental Locking PIN and block rentals. To order blocked content, you will need your Rental PIN.
