Dial-up - installation (Windows NT)

This walkthrough outlines how to get your computer, using Windows NT, connected to the Internet using a regular dial-up modem.

Step 1: Create a Dial-up Networking Connection

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon found on your desktop.
  2. Double-click Dial-up Networking.
  3. Click the New button.

  4. Type TELUS Internet as your Entry Name.
  5. Enter your local access number in the Phone number field. If you do not know your local access number, refer to our list.

    NOTE: If you subscribe to Call Waiting on your phone line, ensure that it is disabled. If this feature is not disabled while you're connected to the Internet, an incoming call will disconnect the modem. To disable Call Waiting, see How to disable Call Waiting below.

  6. Ensure that Dial using is correctly set to the modem you are using.

  7. Click the Server tab. Ensure that only TCP/IP and Enable software compression have check marks beside them.
  8. If Enable PPP LCP extensions has a check mark, remove it.

  9. Click the TCP/IP Settings button. Ensure that both Server Assigned IP Address and Server Assigned Name Server Addresses are selected.

  10. Click OK
  11. Click on the Script tab. Ensure that there is a dot beside None.

  12. Click OK. You'll now see your new connection listed in the Phonebook entry to dial drop down list.
  13. When you're ready to connect click the Dial button.

How to disable Call Waiting

If you subscribe to Call Waiting on your phone line, ensure that it is disabled. If this feature is not disabled while you're connected to the Internet, an incoming call will disconnect the modem.

To disable Call Waiting for the duration of your dial-up connection, add *70 before the local access number in your dial-up connection.
